Ok, so don’t kill me on the title. I was trying to think of something catchy.
I straightened my hair yesterday. I count this as the first time I’ve straightened since going natural. I do not count the moment of panic I had after I BC’d, as it was a knee jerk reaction and I also did not do it correctly.
I have been toying with the idea of straightening since I hit six months, but wanted to wait until I got a good flat iron or, better yet, got better at rollersetting. Just to let ya’ll know, I have a LOT of work to do on rollersetting.
I take it a sign from the hair gods that I should go ahead and straighten when I was browsing through a Linens and Things that was going out of business only to stumble across a Maxiglide that was super cheap. I’d done my research on flatirons on the hair boards and decided this was definitly one I wanted to try. I now am the proud owner of a Maxiglide and will be posting another post about my initial thoughts about it. Overall though, I liked it.I decided not to use the steam function and to use it on 5, which is half the max.
Also something I had to consider was a good heat protectanct. I can’t let those naps, curls and coils get damaged, can I? So, again, much research on the hair boards. I decided to go with a serum from Fantasia IC. I chose a serum because I thought it would be more coating. It also seems to be necessary to use a heat protectant with cones in order to combat reversion.
Lastly, I had my handy dandy hand held blowdryer with comb attachment. I remember when I was relaxed putting that sucker on high and letting her rip through my hair.
I did not get it super straight, but it’s pretty nice and it let me see my length.
What I learned with this flat ironing experience:
- Straight hair is not as desirable to me as it used to be. I actually find it kind of boring.
- I miss, miss, miss my hair’s texture when it’s straight like this
- My hair is probably the most healthy it’s ever been. I thought I was going to need to do some clipping because I was sure I would find split ends. I didn’t see a one.
- It’s interesting how things have changed. I respect my hair now and won’t do anything just to get it straight. No more getting the tools as hot as they will go.
- The serum was a bit too thick and left my hair feeling a bit greasy.
- Check the weather report before planning to straighten. It rained yesterday and I found out it’s going to rain for the next 3.

Pulled the headband back, yearning for my puff I guess

You did a good job!! I like it. You look so different with straight hair
Your hair looks amazing! So thick and healthy. Its grown alot since the big chop. Next time try using coconut oil before using the maxiglide.
I prefer the curly look on you. Your hair is nice and thick though. I felt the same way after I blow dried my hair for a trim. It’s not that appealing anymore…wow??
great blog
