A few interesting facts about baking soda and skin, hair, and teeth:

  • It can remove buildup from your hair (dilute first)
  • Drop your combs and brushes into 1/4 cup of baking soda dissolved in hot water and it can clean them
  • Baking soda can be used along with lemon juice to keep blond hair from turning green from chlorine exposure
  • A mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide can be used to whiten teeth. My grandmother tipped me off to that one :)
  • Baking soda neutralizes acids produced by bacteria
  • A paste of baking soda and water can help soothe heat rash
  • A bath of 1 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of your favorite carrier oil (or even baby oil) can soften skin and help to avoid dry itchy skin. Be careful in the tub with oils!
  • Sunburn can be soothed with a bath that has a generous amount of baking soda added
  • Moistening baking soda and putting it around the nails can soften cuticles
  • Mix baking soda with your favorite cleanser or dry for a facial scrub
  • 1/2 cup baking soda and a cup of water will freshen breath when used as a mouthwash
  • The ladies on LHCF turned me on to using baking soda and either sea salt or lemon juice to help clear up dark spots on the face. Be careful, this may sting a bit, but it does help (in my experience) even out the skin tone.

I like to use 2 tablespoons of baking soda diluted in about 2 cups of water to sometimes help cleanse my hair before I condition. It does not strip the hair like shampoo does. If you try this, be sure to dilute the baking soda well and to rinse it all out as it can be drying if left in to some folks.

I have always used baking soda to clean my teeth ever since I was a little girl. I still use toothpaste, but at least a couple of times a week I pull out the baking soda and peroxide.

As a side note, I also use it to clean my house and to fresh my son’s diaper pail.

It’s economical, it’s all natural and it’s readily available. I love baking soda.
