I love to sample commercial products, but I really like making my own too. I have a lovely wholefoods grocery story in my town that provides me with a lot of natural products both for hair and body. Here is a spritz I like to use on twists or fingercoils to keep them moisturized. I also spray this on my scalp if it’s feeling dry.
Kcurly’s homemade spritz:
1 part aloe vera gel (100 percent!)
1 part water
A little veggie glycerin or jojoba oil
a few drops essential oils
Aloe Vera Gel- try to only use 100 percent food grade AVG. It will not be gel like, but more like a thick liquid. The gel like ones are not 100 percent and often contain additives.
Water- Water, the ultimate moisturizer. A lot of people like to use distilled water, but I just use regular water out of the tap.
Vegetable Glycerin- A natural, serum like, clear ingredient often found in hygiene products. It is a humectant , which helps draw moisture from the air. So, very helpful if it’s humid out. A lot of spritz recipes call for a lot more glycerin, but I find a couple of drops help me. I really recommend using this in the summer more than the winter. Be warned that glycerin is not a friend to every natural.
Essential oils- Use a few drops of whatever you like. I like rosemary (do not use if you are pregnant!) and lavender.
This just my recipe. Once you learn what your hair likes, you can use your own recipe, adjusting the ingredients as you like. You can even add otherĀ ingredients like your favorite leave in conditioner or coconut oil (melted). Spritzes are a cheap and easy way to moisturize your hair. You may invest a bit in the ingredients, but they go a long way.
I like to take a small spray bottle of it with me to work sometimes, as well as keeping one at home.

thank you for sharing the recipe. This is easy and attainable. Some other recipes are intimidating.
I made this yesterday and my hair came out awesome! Thank you!
Isn’t it amazing what natural ingredients do for your hair. My hair has never felt as healthy and soft as it does now.
I’m going to create your spritz this weekend. I ordered the KCCC and I’m waiting for that to arrive. Question: will the daily spritz take the ‘hold’ out of the KCCC. One of the main reasons I was roped into the gooey gels for two-strand twists was that it made for a beautiful twist out once I was done with the twists. I’m concerned that the spritz will make my hair too soft, thus causing the twist out to only last a few days.
Tasha, I would not think that the spritz would cause the KCCC to lose hold at all. Give it a shot!
What is the difference between glycerin you buy at the whole food store and the one at Walmart? I’m about to BC tomorrow and I bought glycerin at Walmart to make my own spritz. Should I use it?
Kcurly, I’m new to the natural world. I’m in the process of transitioning. I’m getting ready to get some kinky twist braids to help in my transitioning, and think your spritz would be a good way to keep my hair and scalp moisturized. Now, when you say 1 part, exactly what does that mean? How much does that equate to? Sorry for my ignorance.
BTW..your hair is beautiful
HI I JUST SAW YOUR MOISTURIZER MIST AND I HAVE A QUESTION: WHAT IS PART WATER OR ALOE VERA GEL? SORRY I AM A LIL SLOW HERE.L
Could you please tell me what brand of AVG you’re buying? I’m a little confused because other than the gel with additives, I’m only finding the kind that you drink and it looks more like water. There are some preservatives included on the ingredient list on the kind you drink. Also, do you think this would work on very dry, fine hair. I’ve tried tons of commercial stuff that doesn’t work. It’s all loaded with silicone and protein.
Thank you!
I have the same question as Rebecca. I have the ALOE VERA Juice (to drink) and I wanted to know if that is okay to use in the spritz. All of your help would be appreciated!
scottie and rebecca, I’m using mountain rose pure aloe vera gel. I buy it in bulk at my local health foods store. Here’s the link to mountainrose website.

Hi All,
In response to KCCC, when I initally used it my hair was left stiff once it air dryed. Information from my curly sisters suggested a leave in conditioner under the KCCC which helped soften my hair. I also found that you can soften the KCCC air dry hair with a homemade leave-in spritzer as many of our CSs have shared.
