Representing natural/curly hair–cartoons Part 1

in Curly cartoons

Its a very important job to represent the beauties of natural and curly hair in the cartoon media. If you have one you’d like featured, please email me. I will continue this in later posts.

Susie from the Rugrats

This little Rugrat, always the voice of reason in a confused toddler world, won the hearts of many a viewer with her kinky pigtails with bows in place (a style I know I rocked more than a few times). Susie’s role was to be the opposite of Angelica the bully like older cousin of the baby Rugrats.

Later in the series Rugrats: All Grown Up, Susie sported a fro and still has a love/hate relationship with Angelica. Susie was voiced by Cree Summer.

Valerie – Josie and the Pussycats

Valerie was the member of the all girl pop group. She was known for her intellect on the show. She also gains the honor of being the first African American female character to appear regularly on Saturday morning television. Her singing voice was performed by Patrice Holloway.

The Proud Family

So not all of the proud family is natural, but check out the afro puffs on “Suga Mama” and the huge fro on BeBe (the baby). Suga Mama is an in-your-face Tae Bo loving grand ma. The show aired on Disney in 2001 and has messages about morality and family values.

Little Orphan Annie

She’s gone through a lot of changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: That curly mop of hair.An orphan saved by “Daddy” Warbucks, the comic that started as a humorous comic for children, later became political and satirical in nature.

Wow! Thanks for the eye opener! I was a huuuge fan of the RugRats and now I appreciate their creativity of each character even more….. especially when mentioning their awareness of natural hair with Susie.

lol My sister’s and I were rocking the same hairstyle when we were little too!!

It’s funny/weird but Susie’s picture randomly reminded me of the girl in BeBe’s Kids! Not sure but it kind of looks natural with the puff in front of her hair.
