I got this flat iron a few months ago from a store that was going out of business. Since these usually run about 80 bucks, the 50 dollar price I ended up paying for it seemed like a good deal.

What makes this flat iron unique? It’s got tiny little teeth on it that supposedly help to detangle while you flat iron. It’s got a steam burst option that is supposed to really help smooth out “stubborn” hair and is controlled by the user with a button on the side of the iron. It’s a ceramic iron, which is always good and you can change the temperature setting. It also comes with a smooth (no teeth) plate  if you want to switch them out.

There are three types, I think. One is the Maxiglide XL, which is what I have, and has a 2 inch plate for coarser, thicker hair. The next is the Maxiglide MP with a 1 1/4 inch plate for all hair types. Both of these have the steamburst and the detangling pins.

Then there’s the Miniglide which does not have the steamburst technology, has plate that measure 1/2″x3 1/4″, and is about 10 inches in length. This is meant for touch ups on the go or to just get your roots. These usually come with the bigger Maxiglide if you order the package.

I like the Maxiglide that I have. I did not like the teeth the first time I tried it. Maybe it’s because I just airdried my hair in a fro and then tried to use it. Little teeth for kinky hair that has not been stretched it a no-no (you would think I’d know this by now LOL!) I guess the demonstration on the website of the iron detangling the hair tricked me!

The next time I used it, I just used the flat plate and it worked out well. The last time I used it, I used the teeth plate after having stretched the hair.  Bingo! Good combo and now I like the teeth.

As for the steamburst…I can do without that. I tried it on a few sections before and it seemed to make my hair more poofy. It’s a good iron even without the steam. The steam comes out in these tiny holes that I notice really get gunked up with product when using it.  It’s a pain to clean them.

Something else I don’t like about it is how the temperature setting is from 0-10 and not specific degrees (ie 400 degrees, etc). But supposedly, it can get up to 430 degrees Farenheit at setting 10. I’ve never used above setting 6.

Here’s an article I found that has good info on how to care for and tips (and warnings) for using the Maxiglide.

Remember, use of heat always comes with the possibility of damage to your kinks and curls. Use a good heat protectant no matter how good the iron is!

Interesting – I’m actually shopping for a flat iron for my stepdaughter’s hair. I’ll have to look into this one. Thanks for sharing.

I used to use the Maxiglide when I had relaxed hair. It worked even when I deeply in need of a touch up. Im scared to use heat on my curls now…And I think it gets way too hot for me.

My friend gave me a maxiglide 2 weeks ago.
I have not flatironed at all since becoming newly natural. as a matter of fact, I don’t think I’ve flatironed since January. Hmmm, I guess that’s good.

I do want to try the maxiglide soon though. My Chi gets way too hot and doesn’t have a temperature control at all.

I decided on the Maxiglide because of the steamburst. I wasn’t looking to really straighten my hair, I really just wanted to see how bad my breakage from earlier this year really was. My is just so coily, that banding really didn’t help. I wanted to know what I was working with before getting a trim.

I was terrified and didn’t go over the 5 setting. I doubt I will straighten again any time soon (won’t say I won’t eve again though)…it was just too traumatizing wondering if I’d damage my texture. But I am glad I decided on this flat iron.

You are correct, anyone deciding to use heat should always proceed with caution.

this hair straightener is amazing laquita. it is definitely worth the money. the steam burst technology is so gentle on your hair as long as u keep it more than 3 inches away from your scalp. i recommend,, for coarser hair, to use the plate with the detangling pins before you go to sleep, and in the morning just go over your entire head with the flat plate quickly. its really , and smooths hair flawlessly. whether blending into extensions by curling it, or simply straightening it, your hair will not take nearly as much damage as wiht a ordinary straightener.

Hello ! I think im getting it for christmas since i asked for it , but I was wondering if it damages the hair ? I never leave my hair curly.. ive been straightening my hair for about 3 years.. big mistake I know . I used to have really nice bouncy curls but not anymore now my hair is horrible when its curly so i ALWAYS straighten it. I really dont know what to do there is no way im leaving it curly.. also because its really short and i have a round face and I just look absolutly horrible. So I thought maybe the steamburst might help? Would it ? :( Or if anyone knows anything I could do … im desperate.

Melanie, there is always the possibility of heat damage whenever you use a flat iron or blow dryer or any other direct heat. May I ask why you don’t want it curly? maybe you could try some other styles like rollersetting instead of using heat so often. Your hair is probably heat damaged already and that’s why it doesnt look the same.

Its really ugly. I tryed everything. I have layers so theres like, frizzy short hair everywhere . Also because its very short .. if it was longer then i wouldnt mind but they just wont grow .. Whats rollersetting?

I was actually thinking of getting this as I totally thought that I wouldn’t have to blow dry my hair first. No such luck for us huh?! I think I may go with the GHD instead.
