Thanks to this natural lady for showcasing her beautiful newly chopped hair.  I love her answer to “What is your biggest problem…?” :) Congrats ToriK!!

What influenced your decision to go natural?

Well, when my son was born he had beautiful thick, kinky curly hair.  His dad and I wondered where he’d gotten his hair from since my husband’s hair was totally different, and I always thought I had naturally straight hair (how funny is that). I had been getting perms since I was little and had no idea that my natural hair was just like my son’s, thick and kinky curly.  After moving into my own apartment and spending a lot of time at home there was a point in time that I neglected to put on a perm for three months, which wasn’t at all normal for me.  I looked at my roots one day, and noticed that these beautiful little spirals (similar to my son’s) were growing from my scalp.  From that point on, I decided to never put on another perm and to embark on a natural journey to see where it would take me.

How long did you transition?

I transitioned for 7 long months

What is the most important thing you learned while transitioning?

Conditioning and moisturizing are the two most important things to do when you are going natural

What’s your biggest problem now that you’ve BC’d?

What problem?..LOL…I love my BC..though it took a little while to get used to it since my hair had never been so short before.

What’s your favorite characteristic of your newly BC’d hair?

The curls and waves after brushing and the easy manageability.

Any advice for the newbies out there?

Make sure you are prepared for shrinkage when you BC…the curls appear longer when transitioning because they have the heavy permed hair attached that stretch out the curls, but once you cut off the permed hair the spirals pop up and are much shorter than they look. And also when BC’ing make sure to cut off all the straight hairs completely or as much as possible.  If you don’t, the curls won’t act right, and your hair will look more frizzy. I experienced this in the beginning. (Getting your TWA shaped helps a lot!)

beautiful hair..and EXCELLENT advice. I don’t think any of us are quite prepared for the shrinkage especially if you transitioned for a year or more…
