Tanita BF680W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor with Body Water–A review

Not only am I a hair product fanatic, but I also heart my scale.

No lie, I weigh myself practically everyday. And when I weigh, I want an accurate weight down to the decimal point.

Before I jump into the review, I feel the need to defend weighing everyday, as I know this is generally not recommended. Daily weights, especially for women, change throughout the month as well as throughout the day. By weighing myself everyday, I can know what to expect in the way of water weight gain. I also can be encouraged not to slip up when I see that I am incremintally regaining weight. Weight daily keeps me on my toe mentally. If I am not weighing myself, then I know I am not on the ball.  For consistency, I only weigh in the morning, after using the bathroom, before I’ve had anything to eat.

But daily weighing is something that helps me and everyone is different. I’ve heard a lot of people say that weekly or monthly weights are better, or for some, no weighing at all.  All that’s fine, whatever works for you, yada yada :)

On to the review:

Upon starting my weight loss journey, I got so frustrated with scales that would change readings within minutes of me weighing myself. Or I had to stand a certain way. And I’m talking a 2-3 pound difference in some cases.  I went through about 3 scales before I found the one I really liked.

I found it online and ordered it after seeing so many positive reviews. It weighs up to 300 lbs, something that other scales also lack, and down to the 0.2 decimal point. Testing it by weighing myself over the course of a few minutes, I find it to maybe  be off by 0.2 pounds if that. It can also weigh in Kilograms if that is desirable to you.

The body fat monitor is optional to use. It measures body fat by sending a electrical pulse up your body (doesn’t hurt but you shouldn’t use this feature if you’re pregnant or have a pacemaker) and also measures your total body water. How accurate are these readings? As far as I can tell through research, it varies. Though it may not be 100 percent accurate in giving you your exact body fat percentage, it can give you an idea of if it’s decreasing or not over time.  This is not a tool that I use very often, however.

This scale also stores 2 user’s information along with a guest mode. It’s very easy to use, quite light (about 6 pounds?), and only takes 4 AA batteries to power it, which I have replaced once in the last 2-3 years since I’ve had it.

From what I hear, Tanita scales in general are just good, accurate scales. How much did this one set me back for? Around 50 bucks, but well worth it.
