Let’s stop the madness…

in Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow (Random Hair Thoughts)

New fashion statement of the century?

Do not get me wrong. I love my satin caps. They are great for protecting my hair at night and when I am bumming around the house . I’ll even wear one out to the mailbox, though it is a super quick trip when I do and I’m ducking behind bushes if I see a car come down the street.

However, how many African American women do I have to see out and about with bonnets on at the grocery store, at the auto mechanics, at the Applebee’s? I work in a medical facility and a lot of the visitors (not patients!) will have on a bonnet. And I would say over half of these are not older women, but early 20s-30s.

Now I did go to nursing school with a girl that would wear one as we all walked across the street in the morning when it was humid and then removed it. I don’t find that to be all that bad. I’m not big on dressing up all the time, but I was taught to not wear rollers and bonnets outside of the house at least.

I have even heard of women that have outfits that match their bonnets!

So, what do you think about satin bonnets in public? I don’t know, maybe it’s not a big deal but it irks me to no end! Speak your piece in the poll below and/or the comment section.

Imo, wearing a bonnet outside of the house is NEVER appropriate. When I was younger, mom wouldn’t even let me wear one in the car, even though I planned to take it off before I got out. If your hair isn’t looking right, then that’s what HATS are for. If the weather is bad, invest in an old school rain bonnet (my nana used to wear one like this http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=206247938&listingid=26094062). I hate the fact that people dress so sloppily nowadays and think its ok to wear anything in public.

OMG! I thought I was the only one who felt that way, I do get tired of seeing women, especially black women walk around with these bonnets on their heads. I am like you, if I have to run outside to the car or mailbox I pray that no one is outside to see me. My husband thinks it is hilarious to see these women out and about like it is the “new natural”.

I have never seen anyone wear a bonnet outside to go anywhere but to the mailbox. I would be so embarrassed. It’s shocking to me that anyone would even consider it.

hmm maybe its just me and my college town laziness but I find it fine in CERTAIN circumstances. For instance, I went on a quick trip to the local walmart in my bonnet. My hair was on some other ish and i really needed to get a condish to co wash with (i don’t have hats so it was my last resort) Now I wouldn’t DARE go to class with it or out to the mall as I’ve seen others do. I find that just sad.

I’m totally against it.

I’m also against seeing women out and about in the mesh wrap cap.

I’m embarassed to wear my silk pretty wrap and will only wear it out if I’m in the mist of a deep conditioning or henna treatment and have no choice.

If you have to go out, at least have the decency to put on a scarf or hat, not a sleep bonnet. TACKY!!!

I was recently discussing this very same thing. Kind of like back in the day with the shower caps and jherri curls :O) Its the same as going out in slippers.
I too work in a hospital and a lot of the visitors do the same thing. Maybe I’m just not in vogue…and didn’t realize that this is the “in thing”

Oh no! If you want to cover your head there are other options.

HAHA!! This is hilarious. I had to comment on it because this past weekend I had to get rushed to the ER and of course since I was extremely sick and had been in bed all day, I still had on my bonnet. When I got there I noticed two other black women with satin bonnets on their heads (whether they were patients or visitors I do not know), but I never thought that this was a new thing. Like someone said in a comment earlier, I too live in a college town and no, honestly I dont even do a double take when I see a woman with a bonnet on in public.

I have been guilty of it… in extreme situations. Scarves only squish my culs and make them all matted. O well. Didn’t know so many people were apalled by it! lol

Oh hell naw. Bonnets have to be *THE* hands down fugliest hair protectors in the history of life. Scarves are perfectly ok in my book. Even rollersets in public don’t kill me. But bonnets? Bonnets send me over the edge. Not a good look. Hideous. I’m even embarrassed to wear mine around the house.

The other night on tv there was a lady wearing a satin bonnet being interviewed by the local news outside of a Walmart. C’mon now, doesn’t get any worse than that.

Listen I’m the woman driving around town in rollers LMAO looking all crazy. If I have to run out real quick I’ll wear my bonnet or rollers. I am gangsta like that LMAO j/k
