in Banding, Random Hair Pictures, Twists/Twistouts

With all the swimming and whatnot, I haven’t done dry twists in awhile. I missed them, even if they are more time consuming than twists done on wet hair. Here’s what I did:

  • Washed, detanlged and DC
  • Banded hair using Afroveda Shea Amla ButterĀ  and sealed with coconut oil
  • Oiled my scalp with coconut oil
  • Let air dry
  • Twisted hair with Afroveda Hemp Butter, dunking the ends that wouldn’t curl in water
Banded Hair, still wet

Just starting the twists here, you can see the banded hair in the back. Banded hair makes it much easier for me to do twists when my hair is dry.

Yay! Im done after hours and hours of work. See how happy I am?

I’d like them to last for at least 2 weeks. I will be doing a lot of running the next few weeks and it’s going to be getting cold and dry so I plan to be spritzing my hair with moisture and keeping it tied up with a scarf when at home to keep the twists in peak condition.

Gorgeous. I have to try this method. Maybe my twists won’t look so fuzzy after three days if I do them on dry hair. I can’t wait for my Shea Amla to arrive.

I love your twists. I have no ideal how you get the back of your hair completely covered with no gaps. Either you have extremely thick hair or I am not doing this right. I need to try the banding. I love dry twist 2!

Wow, your twists are lovely! I’m with Skibies: how DO you manage to twist your hair with no scalp showing? Is there a technique or is it just because your hair is so thick? My twists are always so scalpy and I hate that look, not to mention the fact that exposing my scalp to air makes it very itchy and dry.

Your twists looks great! Now you’re the third person I’ve heard that has used the shea alma! I’m thinking I may give it a try!

I cannot WAIT until my hair is this length. Yours is so beautiful and thick. You’re one of my natural hair inspirations. Thanks Kcurly!!!

Gorgeous twist. I must try banding my hair first too.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your twists! I wish my hair was as thick and as long as yours. One day…

Can you post your 10K training regimen? I’m currently training for an 8K, but I’m planning on starting training for a 10K right after that! Thank you so much!

So beautiful!!!! I was also wondering how you get your twists so even with no scalp showing. How many twists do you do over your whole head?

Luv your twist so juicy! How long do you plan on keeping them in (or how long do they normally last? I know u swim a lot so will u be washing daily after your workouts. I do and would like to get feedback from others who work out if they wash daily. Looking good sista

i get small knots at the ends of some of my twists, even after i get my ends trimmed. how do you remedy this? i do my twists on wet hair. i co-wash with a pretty thick conditioner, use aloe and shea butter to twist(i usually add more shea than aloe to each twist as i twist), and seal the hair from root to tip with coconut oil.

dajewel, some small knots are a part of being natural. I don’t think there is a way to rid them completely. I get them here and there. I snip them out and keep it moving.

However if they are present so much that it is affecting the health of your hair overall, action may need to be taken. It seems like you have a good routine, but you didn’t mention deep conditioning. Two things seem to contribute to knots: lack of moisture and letting the hair shrink up. Are you doing a lot of wash n go’s and puffs? This may be the source of your knots too.

If all that is covered, I would suggest sealing with a different oil or try putting rollers or perm rods on the ends of your twists as they dry so they don’t have a chance to curl upon themselves. You may also try braiding or twisting your hair in big sections while you are washing to keep it from shrinking while you’re doing twists on other sections of your hair.

Hope that helps some :)

Not sure how to ask this one but… When I twist, I twist to the back (directionally). It looks, though, that you twist to the sides and to the back (depending on where you are on your head). Is that the case or does it just look like that?

15 kcurly December 6, 2009 at 10:02 am

Michelle, I twist in whatever direction I want the twist to lay. Does that make sense?

It does… and shows me what I’ve been doing wrong. :-) As always, your site is a big help.

I am new to the natural hair journey and boy, can I say it’s a lot to learn. I can tell small differences in the texture since I have decided to go natural. My hair seems a lot thicker and everyone tells me it looks healthy. I know you have said that it is time consuming doing your twist but, could you please (pretty please, with cherry on top) post a video (short even) on the process? I have decided not to do the BC and my hair is half and half (kinky, half straight). Is there a certain length all your hair needs to be before can do twist? Please help!!! Thanks so much, Peace and Blessings…
