Hi there,
I’ve been a follower of your blog for a couple of months now, luv it. My BC is scheduled for December 4, and now that it’s scheduled I’m nervous about being unprepared. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve known this was coming for some time now and I’ve started to purchase a few products, stuff for the aloe vera spritz, shea butter, coconut oil and some Miss Jessie’s. After reading several blogs for months I’ve received a few messages loud and clear the strongest being that I need to find the regime that works for me. That being said, with three weeks to go, what products and items do I ABSOLUTELY need when I get back from the beauty shop with a head full of natural hair? I’m feeling a bit like I’ve studied to much info for a test and just need a little direction. Help!

Dream, how exciting that you are about to BC! You’ve got a date set and everything, I am impressed!

On to your question, here is a list of what I feel the average newly natural will need. Of course, everyone has different types of hair that may have different needs, so this list may not be exactly everything you’ll require (or more than you need).

I am also assuming that you will have a TWA, which has relatively more simple needs than longer hair. I’ve placed the things that I found essential for the well being of my hair starting out in green.

I did not make specific product suggestions as that can be found on my Products I Love page.

  • Seamless widetoothed comb and/or Denman
  • Conditioner for cowashing
  • Deep conditioner
  • Oils/Pomade for sealing, oil rinsing, and/or scalp soothing
  • Moisturizer and/or Leave in conditioner
  • Satin/Silk scarf and/or pillowcase
  • Shampoo or mild cleanser such as Castile soap
  • Gel or styling product
  • Boar bristle brush (for smoothing back hair into puff/edges)
  • Headbands and scarves

Of course, as I said, this list is not concrete and I kept it very simple. You may want to use your regular conditioner as your leave in conditioner…so a leave in may not be necessary. You may have a preference to use your moisturizer on your scalp instead of an oil.

Experimenting is key. Good luck and we would love to see pictures of your BC when you do it!

Giant thanks! Actually, I got a little anxious and moved it up to this Friday. Product wise, I think I’ll be in good shape. I’ll keep you posted and thanks again for your tips!
