Today’s Hair/ Shed Hair

in Protection from Swimming and Summer Sun,Updos

I went swimming yesterday. Unfortunately, my hair was in an old braid out. If you’ve read my swimming routine, you know I usually only swim while my hair is in twists. I didn’t have time to put in regular  twists so I put in a lot of conditioner while sectioning the hair off in a few big twists.

After swimming, I began detangling. Let me tell you, it was a nightmare! I have never had a detangling session that bad. It just goes to show that I really need to stick to my swim routine.

After about 2 hours of detangling, I just decided to put in some big plaits. I then pinned the plaits up and slapped on a scarf. Wa-lah! A nice updo.

I thought I’d take this opportunity to “show off” my shed hair. I shed lots. I always have and probably always will. This is my shed hair after 3 weeks without combing. This is not from my recent horror detangling session but from the last time I washed my hair. I’ve been saving the hair in this bowl  in order to share it with ya’ll (I’m sure my husband officially thinks I’m a freak LOL)

Pretty gross, huh? The white stuff is conditioner

Remember, shed hairs will always have a tiny white bulb on the end. Broken hairs will not.

Anyway, back to the swimming. I’m going to try keeping these plaits in until I swim again, which should be this weekend. I’m going to try the same swimming routine, but with the plaits to see if it would work as well. I will update next week on how it goes!

Cute updo! Are they just box braids pinned up? Or did you have a specific parting method?

that doesn’t seem like a lot of hair for the amount you have on your head actually.

Thanks ladies. Alice, I just finger parted willy-nilly. Nicki, I will try to do a tutorial.

sarah, a lot of it escapes down the drain unfortunately.

Wow! You are fearless – but I’m glad you showed how much hair you shed. It good to get some perspective to see if I’m shedding a lot or a normal amount.

Great blog post, as usual. And it’s wonderful to hear from another black woman who loves to swim.

Your hair-do is fierce! Thanks for posting that picture of the amount of shedding you get. I almost forgot what’s normal after being loc’d for 14 years.

I’m going through this shedding thing too and it’s my ends not from the roots.I’m worried about what to do next.I feel like I take care of my hair best I know how,so is it really a good idea not to comb your hair on a regular basis,I’m trying to find a protective style that I can stick with,I really need help

Yolanda, if you’re losing hair from the ends, it’s breakage, not shedding. I would check up on your moisture on your ends and use styles that help to protect them like buns. You might also try sealing your ends with an oil. How often you comb is up to you and your hair. Some people never comb their hair, only fingercomb, and some have to comb everyday.

OMG I love that updo! Your braids would eat my braids for breakfast!
