Email from Ashley:

Hi kcurly, Im ashley (age 18) and I am thrilled to be going natural. The problem is, I dont know what protective styles to use because I’m sooo self conscious about my forehead! It may sound a bit miniscule to you or even absurd but my forehead is what’s holding me back from embracing the true look of my natural hair. Do you have any suggestions??

Through my research, most of the styles I’ve seen have the forehead exposed…and that really scares me. Perhaps the solution is to just get over it, and embrace my forehead…lol. Please help. So far, I’ve been using Carols Daughters hair products and Cantu Shea Butter products. Attached is a picture of how I’ve been wearing my hair.

p.s. I didnt do the big chop, my relaxed hair was cut into a short style.

Ashley,

Yes, ma’am, you have the solution.
Embrace your face. People get mad when I say that, but your forehead is a part of your face. I did a post on loving your forehead awhile back:
What do I see in this picture? A beautiful young woman. I don’t see a conehead forehead :) It’s funny how we try to hide behind hair. Hair should be something that frames our face, not hides it.

Unless your forehead starts at the TOP of that headband and/or you have a problematic complexion (pimples etc.), you have NOTHING to be scared of. You are gorgeous! Embrace your face.

All I have to say is embrace it!!! It took me a while to do growing up because I hated my forehead. I always had bangs or something to mask this thing. During high school I started dancing and had to wear buns. So actually seeing just me my face and forehead I started to get comfy with it and loving my WHOLE face! Forehead included!

Wow this post just reminded me that I used to be self-conscious about the size of my forehead. I promise you will let that go. When I had a perm, I kept bangs or swoops. When I finally went natural at 16, I only knew how to style my hair in a puff so I was forced to have my forehead exposed. If you don’t focus on it, no one else will

My forehead is huge too… and I love it! :) You are absolutely stunning, fyi. Yep, it’s time to just embrace it, lovely.

Your forehead really doesn’t look very large to me :) Relaxed or natural, you can’t spend your whole life hiding behind your hair! You hair should NEVER be the only thing going for you, remember that. Who knows? Maybe going natural will be just the thing to help you fall in love with yourself! Good luck!

I shall begin my comment by wagging my finger :) Young lady, your forehead is not huge and you are absolutely gorgeous. If someone decides to tease you about your beautiful face then that’s their poor judgement and you should ignore their comments. If anything I’m jealous because you have way clearer skin than I do and *you’re* the teenager. Simply not fair :)

My appreciation goes out to everyone who commented. Thanks so much for the encouragement! I’m still a bit unsure about my giant forehead but I’m learning that we all have to embrace our imperfections :) once again, thanks.
