Hi – I have been natural since 2004. I started my locs with braids in 2004 and I have really been enjoying the journey. Come see how my hair grows out through the years on my YouTube channel. Stay blessed!!
Hi
I would also like to go natural but don’t want to do big chop how can I do it?
I have been without a relaxer for over a year now. I was tired of the relaxers, they were thinning my hair and I just didn’t feel I needed it. I have been going to Domincan stylists for a few years and whether my hair was relaxed or not, it seemed to look great after being heat styled. After about 5 months with no relaxer, my hair was little past shoulder length and in great shape. The six through year mark has been horrible. I have had lots of split ends, extreme dryness, lots of shedding. I have had to consistently get trims and have lost over 4 inches of length. I have been so depressed about it. For normal styling I use carol’s daughter shampoo and conditioner but they aren’t helping with the dryness so I am going to try coconut oil and salerm products. Every two weeks I go to dominican salon where they was, roller set and then blow dry the roots straight. My hair still look relatively the same although since it is short I notice it doesn’t fall exactly the same. I am on a mission to get the 4 inches back by the end of the year. I plan to buy some B complex vitamins and drink protein shakes to speed up the growth rate. I have been taking gnc hair skin and nails vitamins but I’m not sure if they are really helping because of all the trims. I am not going to do any more trims until the end of the year. So if you want to go natural, everyone can do it and no need to chop all the hair off. My hair still looks great by normal standards, I just have to get the dryness under control. I have been putting some carols daughter oil in it daily which is really helping to. I also want to try some half wigs and wearing my regular hair in braids. I will keep you posted on my growth project.
Great site- love the way you’re giving a platform to share stories. Writing my transition story has been on my “to do” list for a long time. I’d love to do it for this site!

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your blog. I went (no heat) natural in July 2010. Newly Natural has helped me through some frustrations. And gave me the knowledge needed to gain hair independence. I even joined a natural hair meetup group here in Dallas.
I love all the things you talk about on your blog. I have been natural for 3 years, and have had great growth in that time, without having to do the Big Chop, I was kind of afraid of that. So no matter how you are growing it ladies, keeping growing your beautiful natural hair. Be blessed.
Im 15 years old. And i had a perm for only 5 years and my hair started breaking badly. I wanted to transition for 8 months but gto exited and did it DEC 25 ! I lasted four months. Pics Maybe ?
How long did you transition? Just over a year…my hair was ‘healthy’ BSL relaxed hair so everyone thought I was crazy cutting it (and still do!)
What styles did you transition with? At first braid outs, then my roots started needing more attention so blowdryed and pressed my hair at the salon to prevent breakage while following all the tips from online forums (moisture, protein, home made products). Then began to adore my own texture over the straight relaxer and this week chopped it off…..hmmm like you, was not exactly what I expected!
What are your favorite products so far?
KC Knot today; shea butter; coconut oil;
What do you love most about your hair?
the thickness, texture and the curls at the end of a braid but hate the length, the straightness around the front (any advice) and feel too self conscious to wear it outside so currently wearing a wig (which I hae never done before)
Was the manner in which you BC’d?
Kept thinking about it, reviewed you tube videos of BCs, then one day was passing a hairdressers and literally went in as a walk in appointment and left my long locks behind me…! Despite currently being too shy to go out, I am glad that I chopped it, at home I love playing with it.
List any opposition/problems you faced along the way.
pictures of you relaxed, transitioning, post BC, any styles you’ve tried
Transitioning was hard on wash days and frustrating managing the two textures. Definitely glad I have gone for it.
Happy to forward pics, just let me know how! x
Hi KCurly
I love this your page btw, you have really saved me from doing making some really critical mistakes. My last relaxer was in June and I made the plunge (BC) in December. So I have been researching and going through your site and I would like to know if you can break it down for me what is the routine I am suppose to do. I am not completely out of the loop, my routine is to co-wash, moisturize,do a leave in, and seal it with oil but besides that I am lost. I don’t know when to oil rinse, ZCS, protein treatment or anything else and before I start buying all of this stuff I want to know how to use it. Though my hair is growing, I do not feel like its healthy enough because I am not pampering it as I should. The results of my ignorance is that my hair is dull and my curls are really extremely frizzy and not defined. Please help!!
You Really should check out and try ADIVA NATURALS.
How long did have you been natural/how long did you transition: I’ve been natural since February 2010. This is my second time around. The first time was for about 3 years. I didn’t do a transition this time, I just did the BC.
What was the biggest obstacle: I guess the biggest obstacle was getting my stylist to cut my permed hair! LOL. I had shoulder length permed hair and she was having a hard time, LOL..She did it, but I could feel that she really didn’t want to. I quickly found a natural hairstylist!
What is your favorite styles: I’ve worn a TWA since getting my hair cut. I was cutting my hair every 4-5 months, sometimes longer – sometimes shorter intervals. Then I was doing it when the seasons changed, LOL. I haven’t cut it since December 2011. Want to see what else I can do with it. I am loving the longer natural hairstyles that Kcurly and others are sporting!
What is your favorite products: Right now, I’m hooked on JANE CARTER SOLUTIONS. I rarely shampoo, but when I do I’m using up other products that i’ve had and liked in the past. I love JCS’ nutrient replenishing conditioner, but right now i’m using my old standby “Suave Coconut Conditioner”. I also use Shea Moisture’s conditioner. I change my product use everday it seems, but I make sure I cowash and use a leave in. JCS leave in is GREAT! Sometimes I use the JCS Curl Defining Cream, but since it’s getting warmer here in the Northeast, I’ve cut down my consumption to avoid further shrinkage. I also use coconut oil and sometimes olive oil as a rinse out. Eventually, I will probably transition totally to JCS.
Any advise to Newly Naturals: Love and accept your hair for what it is…no judgments, no expectations. Relax and enjoy getting to really know your hair – have fun with it! Oh, and of course, take good care of it, eat good foods and drink tons of water
I want to say you are doing a great job with this blog and im a big fan of it all! Please stop by my website and tell me what you think. I am a single mom of two living in Maplewood NJ and have a large organic all natural bathing product line. I look forward to seeing your next blog!
I just discovered your blog and so far I really love it. I recently did the big chop in may 2012, I am always looking for inspiration from other fellow natural hair sistas. Again good job on the blog.
