Buns

I am wearing a bun this weekend. I call it my “Banded Bun” and am currently working on a video tutorial on it. I hope to have it up sometime this weekend. Life has been a little busy!

I tried to do a big, quick twist out last night. It wasn’t completely dry in the morning and I was in a hurry, so I did a high bun. I didn’t worry about my edges all that much, just smoothed back a little Almond Glaze with my palms. It turned out nicely.

Still straight right now though I’m rocking a bun currently. Someone at work asked me why I straightened my hair only to put it up in a bun. I wore it down one day, the other two days, I had it up.

I told her three reasons. One, I don’t like hair on my neck very much, especially when I’m working. Two, just because my hair is straight, does not mean I’m giving up on the protective styling! My ends are still fragile, maybe more so. Finally, I like buns. They are elegant and they are simple. Here’s my messy bun from yesterday.

In other news: For those of you who’ve been asking, I will do more youtube videos, so you can expect those in the future. One I’m working on right now is a puff tutorial. I’m also working on more hair history related pieces that I hope you will all enjoy. This week you can expect a few posts on straight natural hair.

Thanks, as always, for reading!

Ribbons on a bun

Buns can be pretty boring to some people. I grew up wearing them a lot, so I like them, but you can always jazz them up a bit. Here’s a bun I wore recently with my twist out.

Getting the bun started. I gathered my hair up loosely.

Spread the hair out and secure with another ouchless band, tucking in the ends. Ta-da: Theres my bun.

First I added a thin ribbon headband. This is a fun ribbon I had in my scarpbooking supply. I felt like I would never use it in a scrapbook. Its got an interesting design to it.

I then placed another smaller piece of the ribbon around my bun loosely.

Just a note: I dont brush my edges at all when putting the twist out into a bun. Brushes and twist outs dont go together. The messy bun is in right now, so take advantage!

How did I forget that I wanted to do buns so badly? I’ve been wearing my hair out for days now and it really needed a break. I haven’t been swimming yet this week so I was trying to think of the best style that could be done in the least amount of time. I do love my twists, but just don’t know if I want to do them at this point in time. SA (thanks!) suggested I do flat twists and I do plan to practice this style, but not as of yet.

So why not a bun? I remember when my hair was shorter wishing and hoping and praying for a bun. Well my hair is long enough to do them now. I will see how this goes as a protective style. It was my staple when relaxed. It’s also getting hot and sometimes I just don’t feel like having a lot of hair all around my face and ears. That’s why spring/summer is such a great time to BC.

This wet bun was done after deep conditioning with AOWC, detangling with the Denman brush, and then applying liberal amount of Abba Nourishing leave in under JC Nourish and Shine. Of course I smoothed down my edges with Almond Glaze and my boar bristle brush. I soaked my goody ouchless band with jojoba oil first and then pulled my hair back with it. I made the bun with the aid of my cool pony holder from AfriquLeChic (you can’t see it really well, but it’s the aqua beads around the bun). I tied my edges down with a satin scarf last night, put a bonnet around the rest and then wrapped a small towel around all of that in case it leaked through at night.

I also applied an oil to my scalp to prevent the heeby-jeebies (also known as itchy scalp).

It’s not perfect, but it turned out well.
