You have a good friend who just started mixing her own products at home. She’s very excited about it and has been proudly telling everyone about her experiments.

One day, she calls you on the phone to let you know that she has found the perfect recipe for moisture and shine. You tell her how great that is and meet her for lunch the next day.

Though her hair looks fab, you can’t help but notice a terrible stench emanating from her ‘fro. As she walks through a crowd, people turn around to wonder where the terrible smell is coming from. You realize this smell must be coming from her latest concoction.

She seems completely oblivious to the smell. You know she is a sensitive person so you tell her how great her hair looks then ask casually for the ingredients to her recipe so you can “sniff” out the problem.

She smiles knowingly and says that it’s a secret recipe. She also mentions that she’s been getting some nasty looks from jealous people all day because of how great her hair looks.

You have been searching for the perfect person to give you that hot new cut you’ve had your eye on. The upscale salon downtown can do the cut, but it will be way out your price range at nearly 500 dollars (or pick whatever amount that would be too much for you!)

Kee-Kee, your best friend’s cousin, has just gotten her beautician’s license and swears she can replicate the cut. She will do it for 50 bucks and the rights to use your picture in her portfolio.

For whatever reason, it is mandatory that you dye your hair. You have two choices: Fire engine red or platinum blonde! (Some of you may have already done this!)

I know I usually do a “what if” question, but I thought I’d do things a little differently this time.

I’ve noticed a trend among young AA girls: wearing weaves. I’m not talking about extensions in their braids. I’m talking about a full weave or a even a phony pony.

I’m sure many of you saw this video of young Kayleigh, a 3 year old featured on Toddlers and Tiaras. If you haven’t heard of this show, it’s all about the over the top moms who enter their girls in pageants. Very disturbing show. (I’m not saying all pageants are like that, but we all know there are some fanatical moms out there).

Now, I’m not going to start in on how RIDICULOUS it is for a baby to have a weave in her little hair. I’m also not going to start in on the type of pageants where preschoolers and toddlers are dressed like little women and paraded around to see who’s the prettiest. But, doggone it, how far is too far?

Even the “phony pony” clip ons they make for kids are a bit much for me.

So, I am going to ask this question: How damaging is it to a very young child’s self esteem to have an extension/grade of hair that is not anything like her own?

What if…

You have a small son who’s hair is growing like a weed. His daddy insists his hair be left to grow, however, he refuses to be involved in any styling as he thinks you do a much better job (at least that is what he says!) Daddy  says he will be heartbroken if his son’s hair is ever cut. What do you do? Continue to care for it, putting it in protective styles? Let him just sport an afro? Or take him to the nearest barber shop?

What if…

You’ve just done the BC after a few months of transitioning and are sporting your glorious TWA. Your nine year old daughter, who’s almost waist length hair is permanently straight from heat damage (you know better now!), is very excited about your new style. You had planned to grow her hair out, slowing trimming the damaged ends. But now she wants to be just like mommy and have a TWA!

Do you give her the BC?

What if…

You’re at the grocery store and suddenly a woman compliments you on your bone structure and hands you a card. You could be the next face of an up and coming makeup company. However, the company wants to go in a new direction: Bald models. Yes, that’s right: You would need to shave your head…bald.
