So ya’ll already know I’m a stan for Jaden Smith’s hair. This child has some massive hair. Again, the jealousy starts to creep in!

Um, Willow…little Willow…what the hell? Yes, she has one side of her hair closely cropped. How old is she again?

Dayana Pires
Dayana Pires is a Brazilian model. She’s one of my hair idols because she’s worked with LOT of different colors, doesn’t straighten her hair for a lot of shots. While most models only wear curly hair for “wild and ethnic” shoots, she wears her wash-n-go/fro when she’s doing glamours AND athletic and we have similar hair textures.
I’m a firm believer in the idea that curly hair (especially BIG HAIR (all caps necessary)) is really glamours, so seeing someone in a satin party dress gives me photographic evidence to all the people who INSIST I have to have my hair “done” before going somewhere. I love hair color, I think it’s a really cool way to change up your look without really “changing” much. I don’t see many women with long hair in a similar texture as mine, I usually see it looser or curlier. It gives me hope the “one day” my hair could be that long…If I don’t get scissor happy first!

Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae is a Grammy Award-nominated American urban/alternative singer/songwriter/performer. I LOVE updos. If I had enough hair, I’d wear an elaborate and ridiculous updo EVERY DAY. Janelle has mastered a front roll (I don’t know what it’s called–but it’s great!) and it suits her perfectly.
Janelle has this crazy/cool thing going on and her hair suits her personality PERFECTLY. Her hair wraps up her entire performer package and makes her stand out. While this isn’t hair related, I like the fact she’s making her own sound in her own way (a futuristic soap opera!) instead of following what sells/what doesn’t sell. Her lyrics have a lot of power and meaning behind them:
Left the city, my momma she said don’t come back home
These kids round’ killin each other, they lost they minds, they gone
They quittin’ school, making babies and can barely read
Some gone off to their fall, lord have mercy on them
One, two, three, four, your cousins is round’ here sellin’ dope
While they’re daddies, your uncle is walking round’ strung out
Babies with babies, and their tears keep burning, while their dreams go down the drain now
Are we really living or just walking dead now?
Or dreaming of a hope riding the wings of angels
The way we live
The way we die
What a tragedy, I’m so terrified
Day dreamers please wake up, we can’t sleep no more
-Sincerely, Jane
which, in my opinion, really elevates her above most up and coming and even established artists.

Imani Coppola
Imani Coppola is an American singer/song writer, violinist and 1/2 of Little Jackie. Honestly, I never heard about her until I came across “I believe the world should revolve around me” by Little Jackie and I COULDN’t STOP STARING at her beautiful blown-out, picked out fro. I like her lyrics for being so female/self-positive:
There’s only one me in the galaxy
I am an endangered species
This kind of flower don’t grow on Earth
Just lettin’ you know for what it’s worth
This kind of mountain shouldn’t cause a depression
So I bide my time with philosophical questions
Not for nothing but what came first?
The chicken nugget or the egg mcmuffin?
-I Believe the World Should Revolve Around Me
and not being excessively man/money oriented.
Like Monae, her hair fits her quirky persona. I rank her HIGHER than Monae because she managed to work some really cool color in her hair, she plays with updos but prefers what looks like a wash-n-go or a picked out look AND wears make-up that stands out against her bold hair. Again, you don’t see many performers rocking BIG HAIR with “loud” makeup so it always makes me happy to see one who can do it. Especially when someone like me loves bold eye colors. ^_^

Thanks for entering Brandiss!! I love your picks!
Hi!
My three hair idols are:
1) Leaf Newman (singer/musician): New found talent that just recently won singing competition on BET’s “Welcome to Dreamland”. Her hair is awesome. She proved that your hair does not have to be bone straight (like her competetor on the show) in the entertainment business in order to get ahead.
2) Tracy Pierre (model): She does fitness training also. The combination of blond, red and black in her fro is uniquely HER! I just loved how she spiced up her TWA.
3) Laura Izibor (singer): From African and Irish decent, her curlies are too cute. Her hair is just as bold and beautiful as her voice.
Denise was a runner up for my latest giveaways. Here was her winning answer:
1. Lisa Nicole Carson

I did my BC at 17 right before I left home. I had no idea how to treat my hair. In the ’90s most naturals wore extensions (braids) or locks or TWAs. Lisa Nicole Carson was the first person who had hair I loved and coveted. She played second fiddle to Nia Long and Calista Flockhart, but she never stood in the background. Not with that hair.
It was bold, big, and sexy just like her personality. And she was funny! Who could forget that sex scene in Jason’s Lyric. Even with “Patra” braids she was served in that movie!
2. Shakara Ledard
After college, I started to press n curl regularly and soon tired of it. I remember cutting my hair into the Halle Berry “Swordfish” cut but grew it out and was left with layered heat damaged hair. I began to amass a collection of natural hair photos I would swipe from the Web. Shakara Ledard was a instant favorite. She was everywhere, videos, Sports Illustrated, catalogs, and Essence. I loved that she was Caribbean and I loved her free form hairstyles. She would do a fro, curls, straight. But it wa never “perfect.” At the time my hair was not behaving all I wanted was a big hair like Shakara. She embraced her naps and frizz. There are plenty of pics of her with defined wet curly hair, but I love ones like these:

Oh and her husband had a cool fro as well, I think they may be divorced.
3.Ajuma Nasanyana

LOVE LOVE LOVE her…I came across her model profile on nymag. She is Kenyan and gorgeous. She has rocked a close crop, baldie, and a twa. I know the fashion world is not easy with the rejection, distance from family, and so-so pay. What I love about her is that she could easily grow some hair and glue in some tracks to get more work, but hasn’t.
And she wouldn’t be the first black model to do so. I am glad she has found a look that works for her and works for designers. I think her hair is simple and chic and brings out the best in her, and isn’t that what hair is supposed to do?

I am a big fan of the Terminator movies (ok, the third one sucked, but they can’t all be perfect). I was pleasantly surprised to see that the African American females (2 that I could count) had natural hair in this movie. I mean, it makes sense, right? In a post apocalyptic world, you wouldn’t be rummaging through the rubble at what used to be Sally’s hoping there was a relaxer kit intact.
One of the females I saw had a main role. Her name is Jadagrace Berry and she’s super cute under a mop of big curly hair.
She is also a bad ass. Check her out with the gun.

Also in the movie, in a more minor role, was Esodie Geiger sporting a lovely TWA as she helped to wrestle with a machine.

My mini movie review: It was pretty good. Not something you want to take the kids to see. If you have not seen any of the other Terminator movies, I wouldn’t watch it.

Jill Scott is featured on the latest cover of Jet magazine with a gorgeous fro. I saw this in the grocery store and had to pick it up. The article is very interesting and told me a few things I did not know about Ms Scott: she is pregnant (due this month!) and she was told she could never have children. Go Ms Scott and congrats on your little boy!!
