Celebrate Black History Month…Get a relaxer!!

February 18, 2010

There I was innocently buying some liver at the grocery store when I glanced over and saw this display. Let’s see here…we’ve got some ORS, some proclaim hair gel, and some relaxers. Now, I wasn’t going to talk about this, because I know most of you have seen the ad that’s been floating around the [...]

Today’s Hair and Upcoming Posts

February 15, 2010

Somehow, my braidout is still hanging in there but just barely. This weekend has been crazy for me. I had to spend the night at a hotel unexpectedly, so I pulled my hair back in a puff loosely with a scarf for the last few days. It’s frizzy and less defined, but it works. I [...]

Little Girls and Relaxers

February 5, 2010

Growing up, we had a family tradition that little girls waited until the age of 11 or 12 to get a relaxer. When I went to school, other African American girls were , for the most part, also natural. It may have been pressed or blowdried, but it was not relaxed. I fondly remember coming [...]

Shrinkage and You

January 30, 2010

Shrinkage is a characteristic of natural hair…and, more than likely, curly hair period. Of course, even though curly hair does shrink up and appear shorter because of the curl pattern, kinky hair can do this in an epic type of way. The picture above is from when I straightened my hair this last time. The [...]

Martin Luther King Jr.

Thumbnail image for Martin Luther King Jr. January 18, 2010

On this day, I feel very thankful. I often think about the times of turbulence in this country during the earlier part of the century. I wonder, living in the deep south, how much my life would’ve been different from what it is now. I know the difference would’ve been shocking and drastic. I am [...]

Have YOU ever been that girl?

January 15, 2010

Being Newly Natural, one of the first things you might encounter is some negativity toward the awesomeness that is your kinky hair. We get our feelings hurt or we scoff at them… we wonder why they even care. I have a confession to make. One that I just recently remembered. I have been that girl. [...]

Today’s Hair

December 22, 2009

I tried to do a big, quick twist out last night. It wasn’t completely dry in the morning and I was in a hurry, so I did a high bun. I didn’t worry about my edges all that much, just smoothed back a little Almond Glaze with my palms. It turned out nicely.

Cover of Publishers Weekly

December 20, 2009

In explanation of the picture after an uproar over the cover, PW offered this on their website: The image was a photograph taken from a new book from W.W. Norton, Posing Beauty: African American Images from the 1890s to the Present by Deborah Willis, a collection of carefully chosen photographs intended to highlight the physical [...]

I’m just not that type of girl

December 19, 2009

Growing up, the women in my family never wore extensions or fake hair. Only those “ghetto girls” wore braids, period. We relaxed our hair, wore it neatly coiffed or in a bun. No cornrows, no fingerwaves, none of that. I was always still curious about these styles, though. I remember grilling a friend about how [...]

An email from Keah: So Kcurly, I wanted to get your opinion on this. We are taking the kids to go see The Princess and the Frog this weekend, and I sent the trailer to my husband cause he hadn’t seen it. Now he emailed me back a valid question, Why do they have Tiana [...]

Christmas Party

December 7, 2009

I attended a work Christmas party and had an awesome time. I decided to do a twist out for the party (on wet hair). I did kind of big twists, left them in for about 2 days, and undid them the afternoon of the party. I used Afroveda Shea Amla to twist and oiled my [...]
