Banding Tutorial

by kcurly on January 22, 2011

in Banding,Tutorials

Finally! I’ve finished my banding tutorial!

Here are the results of my last banding session:

I’ve been wearing it like this since I finished, but I will be putting in mini twists and then wearing buns and updos once again.

Here’s the video. I had to do 2 parts because apparently I have the inability to shut up :) The first video is a little background on banding and going over the materials.

The next video is the actual step by step how to. Now just a fair warning: There is a lot of “um” and “uh” going on :) This is my first time actually speaking on a video so I was fairly nervous. I hope I got my point across though.

Banded Bun Tutorial

by kcurly on February 22, 2010

in Banding,Tutorials

A lot of people make buns when their hair is wet. I’ve tried this and it looks nice but it doesn’t work for me for several reasons:

  • My hair is very thick and takes fo-evah to dry. My hair will remain damp for days in a bun.
  • Wet hair makes my scalp itch
  • I will sometimes notice breakage

You’ve probably seen me do quite a few buns with my twist outs. That works fine, but sometimes I just want to have a bun without having to put in twists. Banding seemed liked the perfect solution.

The only problem is that it’s hard to smooth the hair back into a bun after it’s been banded (at least for my coarse hair, it is). I can never get the edges to look quite right.

I wish I could just put my hair in a pony and then band it, but this still takes a long time to dry. So I came up with this method, using smaller banded sections. Sorry for the lame music, I’m trying to stop using copyrighted music in my videos.

Quick Puff Tutorial Video

by kcurly on December 1, 2009

in Tutorials

I finally got this one up. I ended up deciding that I needed to do 2 different puff videos. I have one puff that I do when I want it to dry faster. This method always look a bit more frizzy than the “drip dry” method, but works well all the same. The products I used in this video also do not yield as much frizz control and curl definition.

I’ll try to get the “Drip-Dry” Puff Tutorial out within the next week or so. I had to do this early in the morning, so I may look a bit out of it. As usual, my techniques may not work as well for you, so use your own discretion.

Ok here it is, nothing fancy. As with the fingercoil tutorial there is a live action part, but mostly a pictorial.

Fingercoil Video

April 17, 2009

So I’m working on video tutorials and I decided to do a fingercoil one since I’d already done a pictorial. I used a lot of the same pictures, but added a clip of me actually fingercoiling. There are more to come. Hope ya’ll enjoy. I will also be making a page just for video tutorials. [...]

Washing out a coil out

April 3, 2009

I was recently asked how to take a coil out down. This is how I do mine so, as with everything I post here, it may not work for you. Also keep in mind that I use a lot of gel when I do my coils so that they will last, which makes it virtually [...]

Cassia Obavata

February 10, 2009

Instead of relaxers ever 6-8 weeks, this is what fills my time during that period No I’m not dying my hair green (though it’s a good color on me, don’t you think?) I’m using a treatment called Cassia Obavata, also called “neutral henna” or “senna” in many circles. Here are a few facts about Cassia: [...]

Banding

January 22, 2009

Banding is a great technique to stretch out natural hair, simply by using bands to extend the hair, preventing it from shrinking up. I just recently did this and found it to be pretty neat. I’ve heard some people do this instead of blowdrying the hair prior to flatironing. It also can be used to [...]

Styling Help

January 7, 2009

Even though I don’t necessarily care for their products, Miss Jessie’s website has pretty neat hair styling tutorials. They include coil outs, twist outs and shingling. The tutorials are pdf files with pictures included. Of course they recommend their products, but you can substitue whatever fits your needs (and budget). If you are thinking of trying [...]

The Puff

December 30, 2008

Here’s a picture of probably my favorite hairstyle, the puff. Puffs are fun and easy. It’s not a protectitive style because your ends are still exposed. Also a lot of people tend to have tangling when wearing a puff very often. However, I find them to be cute, simplistic and quick. I usually allow myself [...]

My natural protein treatment

September 17, 2008

My hair loves protein. I know a lot of people are sensitive to protein, but I’ve never had trouble with it. I’ve tried the aphogee treatment and it works well, but this recipe works just as well for me, without all of the ingredients I’d rather not deal with. I do this about every five [...]

Fingercoils

September 9, 2008

I was asked by a few people to do a fingercoil tutorial. Now keep in mind that I have only done them 3 times, but they are really simple to do, so a tutorial on them should be simple to do too, right? Coils can be done by finger or with a rat tailed comb. [...]
