Melanie, I always admire you ladies over there protecting our country. Especially when it comes to hair issues! You are being a wonderful role model for your daughter and for other ladies out there who wish they could go natural. You not only look beautiful with your natural hair, but you also look too cool in those combat boots! Go girl!
Hi Kcurly my name is Melanie I’m 25 years old I’ve been serving in the Army for 7 years and am a recent veteran of the war in Iraq. I’m married to my highschool sweetheart and the mother of an ambitious 2 year old who I’ll simply call “K”. For as long as I can remember I had always had my hair hot combed or relaxed and I could not recall my natural hair texture until my BC.
Kcurly: How long did you transition?
I transitioned for about 3-4 months. I chose to become natural because I was basically tired of the constant shedding and breakage of my hair!!!! I’d just arrived to Iraq and it was so hot and I was sad and I guess that you could say that I was very homesick I’d just left my husband and our daughter and I was questioning whether or not my decision to volunteer for this deployment was the best decision to make.

During this time I had a lot of new growth and was constantly combing through my head dry I had so my breakage and shedding that it was to the point where I was sweeping my hair up everyday and I it really bothered me. I relaxed my hair for the last time I believe mid August thinking that if I perm my hair and trim the ends that the breakage and shedding would magically end… lo and behold it actually became worse.
Kcurly: What styles did you transition with?
I just basically wore my hair in a low bun nothing fancy honey lol. It was too hot and I was working long hours to really try anything like twist or any other transitioning style. But I did ask my roommate to braid/flat twist the front of my hair so that’s the gist of my styles.

Kcurly: What are your favorite products so far?
My favorite products so far are shea butter and coconut oil. I co washed with V05 Strawberries and Cream while I was deployed and tried and loved Herbal Essences Hello Hydration. I liked HEHH but because of the constant heat and sand storms I stuck with the V05 because it was cheaper. Currently I’m using HEHH to co wash which isn’t very often because I’m always in a protective style I only rock the puff for about 2-3 days. I really like Carols Daughter. It’s expensive but I like it I use the Loc Butter for my TST (two strand twist). I also use the Healthy Hair Butter and the Black Vanilla spray leave in conditioner.
Kcurly: What do you love most about your hair?
I love that my hair is just that mine and that I’m not a cookie cutter duplicate carbon copy of the next women lol. I love that I’m learning my hair and I’m totally appreciating myself more and more as a black woman. Another reason I decided to return to my natural texture was the fact that I have a 2 year old daughter and that I wanted to be the role model in her life so that grows up knowing that straight long hair is not the staple of beauty.

Kcurly: What was the manner in which you BC’d?
My husband cut my hair. I felt like a tennis ball at first but once I threw on some earrings and clothes I felt better.
