Personal Review:

I was pretty excited to try this at the time. The most important reason I was so excited was that I’d read this products old ingredient list which was much better than the current. The old ingredient list did not contain any cones nor any mineral oil (aka parafinium liquidum).

Therefore, I was pretty disappointed when I got it in the mail only to discover the terrible truth. I still decided to try it though, as I’m not completely opposed to mineral oil and cones, and would use it sparingly if it yielded good results.

I applied it following the directions on the Miss Jessie’s website for fingerstyling. I’d always heard that the smell is offensively loud, but I found it to not be that overwhelming. For those interested, there is also an unscented version available.

At any rate, my hair did not like the instructions found on the website. It turned into a big, gummy fro. I tried to rectify the situation, but could saw it as a lost hope and decided to wash it out. As I was rinsing it, I noticed that the curls in my hair seemed to be clumping heavily after just a bit of water. I ran to the mirror and saw this:

Not bad, but not spectacular. I diffused it a bit to help it dry and then let the rest air dry. My curls felt pretty soft, however, there was no significant elongation of the curls. Shrinkage still crept back in and my scalp started itching pretty badly. Not just itching, but very irritated as well.

I decided to take a nap after it dried and tied it down loosely. When I woke up, my hair had a distinctive ashy look to it.  I ended up washing it out before the day’s end and deep conditioning my hair back to health.

Will I buy this product again?

Um, that’s a big no. Maybe if so much had not gone wrong with this product, I would try it again. After all, I did find redeeming qualities in this same line’s buttercreme. However, the whole itchy scalp and ashy hair thing kind of made me think that this would not be a product I could live with. I can also not live with the price when there are a lot of other products out there that give better results without all the inferior ingredients.

Personal Review:

Ok, so I just knew this product was not going to work for me. After all, it has several things that I want out of my life. First of all it has Mineral Oil in it. Then to top it off, there is also petroleum and beeswax in there. I originally tried this only because I got a really good deal on it. Otherwise, there was no way I was going to spend the 60 bucks to try out something that I was sure I wasn’t going to like anyway.

I first tried it on wet twists. As soon as it dried, I hated it. My ends felt crispy, crunchy, not soft at all.

Next I tried it on wet hair to see if I could do a wash n go. It pretty much just sat on top of my hair, leaving behind a (dare I say) ashy looking head of hair. I let it dry though and got that same ashy feeling, and had to rinse it out. It did not define any curls, nor did it make my hair soft.

I was about ready to toss it out the window when I tried it on dry hair one day. My hair was dry before then and I was pleasantly surprised when the buttercreme did make it feel soft once I put it on my fro.

Since that worked out pretty well, I did some dry twists with it. I have a few good things to say about it in this capacity. First, it provided pretty good slip as I was twisting my hair. If you’ve ever twisted airdried kinky hair, then you know the pain of tangles. A good dab of this stuff really loosened it up. Second, my twists ended up very soft. Even my ends were nice and soft. Lastly, the twist out was incredible, probably one of the best ones I’ve had. I’ve included a picture.

When I do twists, I like a heavy product that helps weigh them down a bit and this did the trick. I did however, notice a buildup after 2 days and my hair felt…yucky is the best word I have to describe it. But it held up pretty well.

Would I buy this again? No.  It did leave my hair soft, but not 60 dollars soft. Also I worry about the effect of the ingredients over time. I do a lot of twist outs right now and would prefer a product that I could use and be assured of healthy hair. I can definitly see why some people swear by the buttercreme though (on dry hair).
