Progress-Length and Health

…I decided to go ahead and flat iron my hair. I was on a No Heat Challenge until June of this year but once I thought about it, I realized that’s insane. I live in Humidity City, USA and by June things will be completely out of hand. Plus I want to get back to the pool by June, both for training and for fun with the kids!

As usual I did things differently than the last time I flat ironed. Honestly, I am still trying to perfect this process. Since I only flat iron every few months, that doesn’t give me a lot of practice. However, I’m improving with each try. Below is what I did this time around.

Here are some pictures of the process

After blow out

I put it up in a ponytail because the roots were still a bit damp and I was waiting for them to air dry. That's when I noticed that my edges still had a bit of conditioner in them that I'd neglected to wash out. It was causing a flaky residue.

I ended up having to rinse my edges (very carefully!) to get the product out. I was rewarded with these little ringlets. As you may have read, my edges are recovering from post partum shedding. The area is thin but has had pretty good growth considering that they were near bald at one point

The product that I used from Garnier was just something I picked up in the grocery store. My main goal this time around was to use a ton of silicones in my products. I normally use a non- silicone deep conditioner and then use ‘cones in my heat protectant or leave in. I figured I might as well use them all the way through. That was my first change.

My second was using flexi rods, which have been under my bathroom sink since Moses was a baby, to stretch out the hair before blow drying it. I think the last time I straightened my hair, I did a  rollerset with an attempt to get it as smooth as possible. This time, I was just trying to stretch the hair out and get it mostly dry. It was faster than rollersetting the other way and I just wasn’t in the mood.

Back to the product from Garnier. What I used is called Garnier Blow Dry Perfector Straightening Balm, Sleek and Shine.

Once I got home with it, I saw that it got ok reviews. And although it doesn’t really say anything about heat protection, one of the first ingredients is Amodimethicone which works as a heat protectant, as do most silicones. I almost picked up a similar looking product from Garnier called Garnier Fructis Style Sleek and Shine Blow Dry Perfector Kit.

This stuff really put doubt in my mind. First, it said that it lasted up to 7 shampoos. That sounds like some kind of relaxer or Brazilian Keratin Treatment to me. And I’m scared to death that one day one of these companies is going to sneak some kind of relaxing agent into their products. Also, there are warnings not to use it on relaxed hair, bleached hair, and you need to wear gloves when applying it? Heck no! Something ain’t right!

So I get home and read the reviews. I dodged a bullet. The reviews on Amazon are HORRIBLE! People’s hair falling out, texture forever damaged. It’s scary what some of these companies will put on the market. Anyway, please don’t confuse what I used with that kit.

Anyhoo, here is the finished result. I have to say, it turned out nicely. I pin curled my hair to wear it down but mostly I’ve been wearing it in a bun.

Pin curls

I pinned kind of big sections because I've found that if I use smaller sections, it creates more volume.

Would it be triflin' if I wore this out somewhere? ;)

Pulled my curls forward

Even thought it turned out nicely, I was still a little disappointed that my hair hasn’t appeared to have grown much since the last time I straightened it. Excuse me, I hadn’t retained much length since the last time I straightened it. At any rate, here is my length check.

As my hair gets longer, it gets harder to take pictures. This photo is courtesy of my 5 year old. I knew he'd start earning his keep around here! lol

This was almost a year ago vs today

So I see a little growth. Don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty happy with my length but I would love to see waist length just to say that I did it. I know that I’ve not been pampering my hair as I should so this is my own fault.

All I can do is try again…no regrets, right?

A comment from trell made under my recent La Jay post:

Although, this really looks great with your hair. I wander what is the purpose of being natural if your not going to wear your hair out. I know you have to protect it sometimes, because I wear wigs every now and then, but I enjoy wearing my hair out alot also. It just seems you protect your hair alot. If I am wrong I apologize.

Trell, there is definitely no need to apologize. In fact, I appreciate the honesty :)  I wouldn’t call you necessarily “wrong”, just that your reasoning does not apply to me.I do understand where you’re coming from because I was of the same mind when I first considered going natural.

You see, my opinion now is what is the purpose of being natural if I don’t explore all of the styles available to me? I am blessed to be a part of a race whose hair is so unique that it can accomplish styles like no other. Only with my natural hair could I do these twists, fingercoils, and other styles.

Secondly, just as you enjoy wearing your hair out, I enjoy my twists. And isn’t that what it’s about? Enjoying your hair! Whether it’s wearing it out or keeping it braided.

Lastly, protective styling is just easier and better for the health of my hair. I can be pretty lazy sometimes, so it’s wonderful just to be able to wake up, perhaps spray on some moisturizer, and head out the door. My hair looks great with very little effort and I know that is pretty well protected.

A comment from Vanessa:

Hi Kcurly,

I stumbled onto this site in my search for a way to style my hair (and I’m glad). I am currently transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. My last relaxer was done in April 2011 and since then I found a natural hair care stylist who has been helping me transition. He did my first real cut about two weeks ago. After I gained 4″ in new growth he cut some of the relaxed hair out. He said as I get more new growth he will continue to cut the relaxed hair out until a have nothing but natural hair.

I love you story and I wanted to know the time period between each picture from the big chop?

Also, I am going on a Caribbean vacation in Feb. 2012 for my birthday and I have NO clue as to what to do with my hair. Where I live is too expensive to do braid extensions or a weave. I want to go in my transitioning state, but I do not want to look like a ‘tele-tubby’ on the beach and I haven’t had much experience styling and handling my hair because 9 times out of 10 I go to the salon and let my ‘transitioning stylist’ handle it.

Is there any way of styling my hair that you can recommend?

Vanessa

Vanessa, thanks for reading and congrats on transitioning!

I’ll start with your vacation. First, can I come with you? Second, if you can’t get braids, how about getting some cornrows (no extensions)?

I had a friend who went on a trip to Jamaica and in every picture she had her cornrows pulled back into a low bun with a big pretty flower to decorate it. It was beautiful. Another possibility would be bantu knots.

I know you don’t have much time until your vacation but, if you’re wanting to stop being so dependent on your stylist, there are plenty of great tutorials on YouTube for braids with extensions.

Ok, on to my growth. Here is a mini timeline. I BC’d at the end of April 2008 and started transitioning in the Fall of 2007.

Big Chop April 30th, 2008

May 2008

September 2008

April 2009

October 2009

January/February 2010

May 2011 (stretched)

May 2011 (shrunken)

November 2011

So there you have it. But please remember that everyone’s hair grows differently and the length I’ve achieved in this time period may not be what you achieve…you may even achieve more! You can see more pictures of my growth in my Fotki. Hope that helps!

That’s right, ladies. I’ve been in this game for 3 whole years.

It was 3 years ago that I called my best friend over to cut my relaxed ends off after weeks of agonizing. It was 3 years ago that I cried on the floor of my bathroom clutching my old relaxed ends after my friend went home. It was 3 years ago that I covered up my hair with a scarf for 2 days straight so my husband wouldn’t see my hair.

And it was 3 years ago that, maybe a week later, I did my first set of fingercoils….and fell in love with my hair!

So let’s compare!

Then:

Big Chop, hair freshly washed, still a lot of relaxed bits which I later chopped off

Now:

Wash N Go yesterday. Only moisturizer applied. Completely dry

Then:

Wash N Go post BC

Now:

Wash N Go yesterday

Then:

My first successful twistout on dry hair.

Now:

Most recent twistout on dry hair after removing small twists that were in a for almost a month

Then:

Twists on dry hair. Even though these twists look terrible, I'm still glad I took the picture. Remember that not everyone starts out knowing how to style their hair. Especially when one has been relaxed most of their life. It's a learning process. Scroll down to see how I've improved

Now:

Better technique after lots of practice made all the difference. Experiment and never give up!

Then:

Twists on dry hair. I’d been natural for three or four months here. I was proud of these because the looked pretty good

Now:

This was recently. Even though they are smaller than the ones above, they show how much my hair has grown.

Then:

First flat iron job. About 7 months natural here.

Last Year:

I was really struggling to find some straight hair pictures from this year that showed the length from the front. This will have to do, it is from last year.

Then:

First flat iron job, Seven months natural here

Now:

Not a good shot but you get the idea. This is from January.

Then:

Twists on wet hair-June 2008

Now:

Twists on wet hair--November 2010

I know a lot of people straighten their hair for their hair-anniversary. It makes sense, I suppose, to want to see your length without shrinkage. But I decided to ring in my anniversary with my fro, which I don’t wear much anymore.

I will probably straighten in a month or so just for kicks :)

I put in some small twists on dry hair. I really wanted to go smaller but time was an issue. This took about 8 hours to complete, perhaps longer. I am going to keep these in at least 4 weeks. I did some twists around this time last year and I am pleased with the growth. If you scroll down there are some comparison pictures between this year and last year.

After I banded my hair, I finger parted and twisted my hair with Darcy’s Botanicals Madagascar Vanilla Cream. (Review and twisting video forthcoming soon :) )

I'll be mostly wearing them in buns and updos as planned

I have to start this post off by saying how thankful I am for all of the wonderful people in my life who are helping me celebrate the addition to our family. As someone who has had to grow into adulthood without the typical familial support, it means a lot to me.

My coworkers threw me a wonderful shower at work. It was a joint shower because there’s another girl who’s due the same time as I am. We are both second time (or third time in her case) moms so we were fine with it. It was great and I received a lot of great presents. The cake was fantabulous!! (She had one and I had one)

So a week later I go to a lunch date with two of my friends. Only I show up and there’s a surprise shower for me there! I can not tell you how much this warmed my heart…having friends like this is priceless.

They also provided  some of the most beautiful decorations I’ve ever seen!

The table...diaper cake, real cake, and a basket full of goodies for Baby C.

Her little cake! Her names on top of it and it was oh-so-yummy!

Opening a present...whew look at my flabby arms...we have some work to start doing in a few weeks!

Diaper cake

Myself and one of the hostesses....You may remember "A" from some of my posts. She is a mostly straight natural, but rocks some of the cutest curly buns around! And OMG look at my boobs! No wonder my 4 year old keeps asking me if I'm carrying the baby in my boobies too!! LOL!

A picture of us all outside the restaurant

Anyway, as I said, it was great! Lots of good food, conversation, presents. I left with such a glow. I have wonderful friends and coworkers!

Now on to my hair. I am three years post relaxer currently! Thinking back, I don’t know that I would’ve imagined how much I love my hair at this point. However, I think my growth retention has slowed down a bit. I know it’s due to my hair brushing my shoulders a lot whereas early on it shrunk up above my shoulders (protecting the ends). I am going to address this problem after the baby comes by wearing my hair up more often….or cutting my hair…I’m not sure which :)

This time three years ago, I was transitioning:

Transitioning hairstyle. Twist out. It looks so puny compared to my current twist outs!

For reference, here’s some before and afters:

Twist out on wet hair June 2008

Twist out on wet hair a month or two ago

Twists on wet hair June 2008

Twists today

I’m pretty happy with my length right now. I think I want to get to MBL just to prove I can…after that, I don’t know!

Now more about the baby.

Actually, this is somewhat hair related too. Although I’ve managed to keep my blood pressure down during this pregnancy, I am still swelling. I awaken every morning to extremely swollen fingers. This has made doing my hair a big task.

Luckily, my twist/twist out routine can last up to a month, though I don’t like to go that long without washing. I ended up DCing last week and then being faced with putting in twists. I started doing two of them and my hands ached so badly, I had to stop. To any of you who are dealing with arthritis or any other problems with joints, I commend you for still doing your own hair! This is no joke and I wonder what I will do when I’m an old lady with swollen joints. Probably just keep a short fro or Caesar.

I ended up doing an extremely ugly bun for the weekend.

Ever look at your hair sometimes and think "What the hell was I thinking?" That was me all weekend. But I wore that bun.

I hate, hate, hate wet bunning. Part of the reason is that my hair takes forever to dry so the scalp gets very itchy. To circumvent this problem, I applied liberal amounts of coconut oil to my scalp. It did help a lot. I braided the ends up a bit to try and stretch them out. It looks better on the picture than it did in real life, believe me! By the third day of wear, it was officially a hot mess.

I forced myself to put in twists today, in spite of the pain. One of my goals this pregnancy is for my hair to look decent when I deliver. I am 36 weeks now, so very close. I’m already dilating some and having sharp pains here and there. Sooo, I’m hoping things might kick into gear soon.

Here’s a belly pic:

So, that’s about it. I have a feeling I may be stopping work sooner that I anticipated. I love being close to my new little one, but miss being myself…relatively pain free. I can’t wait to get back into my running and biking…and of course, my races.

Kudos to you if you read this dreadfully long post :)

Thanks to Ria for the video she submitted! From her email:

This is a video I was compelled to make after being informed about a discussion at the natural hair group I formed at my university. I was unable to attend that day, and the one day I was gone, a young man with locs attended and insisted to the group in attendance that his use of Crisco and Blue Magic hair grease made his hair grow five inches in one month. What was worse was that many of the newly big chopped naturals and transitioners were so convinced that they vowed to go try it, despite protest from other ladies who were running the meeting for that day.

She summarizes a lot of good information about hair growth and retention. Visit her blog at www.tobeanaturalista.com.

Hair update–Some breakage

Thumbnail image for Hair update–Some breakage August 13, 2010

Well the aftermath of the braids continues! LOL! First, today’s hair. I did a twist out on wet hair about a week ago. It’s almost time to redo it, but it still looks pretty good. I love the way it turned out. I’ve been sleeping with my Satin Sak to preserve the style. Anyhoo, while [...]

Shrinkage and You

January 30, 2010

Shrinkage is a characteristic of natural hair…and, more than likely, curly hair period. Of course, even though curly hair does shrink up and appear shorter because of the curl pattern, kinky hair can do this in an epic type of way. The picture above is from when I straightened my hair this last time. The [...]

Nape and Edges progress

March 10, 2009

Since I’ve gotten off the creamy crack, my nape and edges have really fourished. My nape is longer than I’ve ever seen it. I remember always having to do a low pony tail because my nape hairs were so short, they couldn’t reach up high enough to be included in the pony. Or trying a [...]
