How did I forget that I wanted to do buns so badly? I’ve been wearing my hair out for days now and it really needed a break. I haven’t been swimming yet this week so I was trying to think of the best style that could be done in the least amount of time. I do love my twists, but just don’t know if I want to do them at this point in time. SA (thanks!) suggested I do flat twists and I do plan to practice this style, but not as of yet.

So why not a bun? I remember when my hair was shorter wishing and hoping and praying for a bun. Well my hair is long enough to do them now. I will see how this goes as a protective style. It was my staple when relaxed. It’s also getting hot and sometimes I just don’t feel like having a lot of hair all around my face and ears. That’s why spring/summer is such a great time to BC.

This wet bun was done after deep conditioning with AOWC, detangling with the Denman brush, and then applying liberal amount of Abba Nourishing leave in under JC Nourish and Shine. Of course I smoothed down my edges with Almond Glaze and my boar bristle brush. I soaked my goody ouchless band with jojoba oil first and then pulled my hair back with it. I made the bun with the aid of my cool pony holder from AfriquLeChic (you can’t see it really well, but it’s the aqua beads around the bun). I tied my edges down with a satin scarf last night, put a bonnet around the rest and then wrapped a small towel around all of that in case it leaked through at night.

I also applied an oil to my scalp to prevent the heeby-jeebies (also known as itchy scalp).

It’s not perfect, but it turned out well.

The twist tutorial will have to be uploaded tomorrow due to circumstances beyond my control. I’d work on it later today, but I have to be at work for the next 16 hours so no can do! Happy Sunday!

I emailed the folks at BB about how I’d heard that their products didn’t get along well with other products and asking if it were true and why that was. I was received a swift reply and here’s an excerpt from that email.

Stacey, Blended Beauty:

Our products are positively charged and many products are negatively charged. Hair has a negative charge naturally so a product that is positively charged will cling to the hair and calm the hair, creating better definition of curls. There was a small article about this in our latest newsletter.

And this from the newsletter:

Spring Frizzies
Why is my hair frizzy?
Why does your hair get frizzy, anyway? There are many causes for this dilemma. Damaged hair strands and static, is a major cause. Many women damage their hair by rough brushing or combing, harsh shampoos, high heats with items such as blow dryers, hair straighteners and other heating tools. Also chemical processing is a major negative factor in keeping your hair healthy and smooth. Static can also be caused by shampoos. Both hair protein and shampoos contain negative charges, repelling each other, which can lead to frizz. There are also environmental factors including UV rays, impurities in water and general humidity. In order to fight the battle of the frizz, there are several ways to succeed. First, soft water has fewer impurities and leaves the hair smoother after washing. Also using a shampoo that has a positive charge, such as Blended Beauty’s shampoos, cause the hair to relax and hug each other, creating more definition. Blended Beauty’s leave-in products seal the cuticle and actually work with the humidity to moisturize your hair, rather than frizz it up! So welcome spring and all it brings!

Thanks for the response, BB. I really doubt anything will rid my hair of frizz completely, as it’s just the nature of my hair, but I’m still looking forward to the results.

Just so you know…

I am NOT affiliated, friends with, or even know SHIMA from youtube. It was recently brought to my attention from several people that my picture has been posted without my knowledge or permission on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkALN_Xlccc

I was made aware that she sells an oil, and I would like to make it clear that I do not support or use this oil. As far as I know, no product can solely grow hair and this oil is no different. I have this written in the disclaimer section, but please do not use my pictures unless given my permission.

I am taking action to have this picture removed, but was making sure that none of my readers thought I was associated with this person.

Edited to add (4/12/09): Shima has removed the video and I will say that she did take quick action on that once I confronted her.

Wet twists vs Dry Twists- The pros and cons of each

April 1, 2009

Shrinkage
Shrinkage with wet twists is to the maximum. If you’re looking to show off your length, you may want to try dry twists. Though you get more definition, you pay for it in length.
These twists were done around the same time, but notice the difference.

Biggest Mistakes Part 3

Not cutting off all of the relaxed ends
My advice is that if you are intending to do the BC, go ahead and get rid of all the relaxed ends.  When my best friend did my BC I asked her to leave a bit of relaxed hair on the ends, mostly because I was uncomfortable about [...]

On the “straight” and narrow

November 12, 2008

Ok, so  don’t kill me on the title. I was trying to think of something catchy.
I straightened my hair yesterday. I count this as the first time I’ve straightened since going natural. I do not count the moment of panic I had after I BC’d, as it was a knee jerk reaction and I also [...]
