FAQs

The blog is always a work in progress but here are a few FAQ that I’ve already written articles about. Feel free to ask/email me any more questions or article requests at kcurly@newlynatural.com.

Kcurly, what’s your hair type?

I don’t put a whole lot of store into the whole hair typing thing. I could never figure it out, because our hair seems to diverse to just lump into several groups. If I have to claim something, I will claim 4a with a small amount of 3c and 4b.

My hair is dry and hard. Should I use a texture softener to make it more manageable?

Are silicones bad for my hair?

Maybe. It all seems to be based on the individual. I am not a silicone user because my hair does not react well to them. It dries my hair out and makes it feel yucky. Some people can use silicone laden products all day long and be fine. It’s not up to me to tell you to use or not use silicones. It’s up to you to experiment and see what works for your hair!

Kcurly, I see that you review a lot of products. Now that I am natural do I have to use the same kind of products?

Absolutely not. You may very well have a totally different set of products (or make your own products) and that might suit you. I just review them for fun mostly. I love trying out new products and my readers reap the benefits of my PJ (product junkie) tendencies!

Is it possible that I have more than one hair type on my head?

I am a vendor and would like you to review my product or I would like to host a giveaway. How do I go about doing this?

You can email me at kcurly@newlynatural.com for shipping info. I am happy to try out products and accessories. However, I will be completely honest in my reviews as I have a duty to my readers to do so.

You may contact me if you want your business featured on the blog, though I can not garuntee that it will be featured.

If you’d like to sponsor a giveaway, I will be happy to do so. I’d prefer for you do the shipping directly to the winner/s.

Kcurly, can I know more about your personal life?

I am so surprised about how much people want to know about my non-hair life LOL. Well, I’m a mother and a wife. My son is 3 years old and a handful. I’m a nurse for the neonatal population. I run, swim, bike, strength train, and enter races when I can (if you’re interested you can read my fitness blog www.runninginafatsuit.com/blog).

I love to read, scrapbook, and watch movies. I also like to help in the community when I can.

Hello,

I’m ‘newly natural’ and I’d like to know the best way to get rid of that white residue that most gels/curling products seem to leave behind when I attempt to do my curly wash & go’s? I’m enjoying my TWA so far, and my curly wash & go’s have been going very well, aside from this white residue problem of mine. Please help!

Thank you!

Aja, sometimes two products just don’t get along. Try using different product combination. I know I’ll get the white balls bad if I leave in my regular conditioner and then use a gel.

I need some help. I have worn my hair natural before, but now I have chosen to wear it natural because perms do not last more than 3 weeks. Of course I know I cannot perm my hair that often, but my natural hair is a straight up mess!!!! I believe some of my problem is the medication I’m on. How can I wear my hair natural and look neat and professional?

Thanks!!!
Michelle

Hello, Has anyone tried the product called Beautiful Curls, that is sold at Whole Foods? If so, how do you like the product?

Hi! I transitioned three years ago, and by transition I mean I cut a weave out of my hair with kitchen shears one day and never looked back. Sort of. For New Years I thought it would be fun to blow out my baby fro, just to see how long it was-my hair grows very slowly and I still cannot control a lot of breakage issues. Here’s my problem, I washed my hair afterwards and noticed not all of my hair has gone back to its curly state. The hair in front is straight AND curly. I usually wear headbands since I lack creativity when it comes to short quick hairstyles. My hair has started to break and I am incredibly annoyed that I wasted all that money for a so-so job. It’s like my hair is telling my serves you right, but my question is what is up with the straight parts of my hair? How do I fix all this breakage?

I just did the big chop today myself and I noticed that my hair isn’t as moisturized and soft as i would like it to be. I read your other blogs about moisturizers and sealers and I was wondering if you had any suggestions for some great sealers and good moisturizers…you know just to keep the moisture and softness?

Tomorrow will be 1 week since i did the b/c my question is what to use on my scalp, and how often. Before the b/c i was oiling my scalp with shea butter. I ordered the Carol’s Daughter products and was curious if the shea butter w/b o.k with that. Also, I was misting my hair with olive oil and water for shine, I think I was better off w/o my moisturizing mix with the products please advise.

10 Deena March 19, 2011 at 9:40 pm

I have a lot of women tell me they want to cut their hair, I know you say we have to find products that work for us, but I would like to be able to recommend a sulfate free shampoo and a good conditioner for people who can’t afford the carol’s daughter line of products, EVERYTHING on the store shelves have something that we should not use on our hair.

I have been relaxer free for almost 2 years now. My hair is just about all grown out but I have noticed that half of my hair is nicely spiral curled and the other side is almost bone straight. Is there anything I can do about this? I went natural to have the option of wearing my hair both straight and curly and now I can’t. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

12 kcurly April 29, 2011 at 11:38 am

Kerry, have you been using heat? If so you may have some heat damage. If not you can try scrunching the hair that is straight with a holding product. Or you can try some styles like twist outs (with perm rods) to make your hair more uniform.

Also, you say you have been relaxer free…are all of the permed ends gone?

13 CharlyesMommy May 2, 2011 at 1:33 am

I have been wearing my hair natural lately because I have been going to the gym and I get tired of straightening it. I usually just do a wash and go, lately I’ve been noticing a lot more breakage. I’m thinking I need to get my ends trimmed. Should I straighten my hair and clip them? How often does it need to be done?

Also, I really want my hair to grow. Do you have a tips or product recommendations?

I’ve heard diff answers and just wanted to know your opinion on it. 2) Im trying to find a product that will slick the front of my hair down but I dont want to use gel, do u have any suggestion

I BC’d about a month ago and I am almost to the point where I actually like my short hair. My regimen consists of cowashing everyday w/cold water, applying oil and gel. The results I get are, for the lack of a better term, crazy! My hair doesn’t look bad, it’s just that I’m amazed at what used to be called naps are now called curls and coils and I have about 3 different types of curls and coils on my head.

I live in the South and it is very hot here–right NOW–I will not have to worry about leaving the house with a wet head until around October. I would like to know if you know of a way I can continue doing wash and go’s during the winter. I am afraid of getting sick–I think I am on the verge of catching a cold right now.

I would appreciate any information you can provide. And thank you for making this forum possible.

I’ve been natural for almost two years. I’ve always worn my hair super short but wanted to try something different, long hair. My hair grew like I wanted and I’ve been wearing it long and straight but no relaxer. I want to go back kinky curly but it won’t. Its as if I have a relaxer. The texture of my hair changed drastically. How long do you think it will take to get the kink back and is there anything I can do to help the transition back to that state? Being new at this “hair” thing, I assumed I could rock both styles interchangeably. I see now that I will have to choose one. While I do not like putting heat on my hair daily, I do like the look. Thanks!

I need some help on what to use while taking my hair thru the natural transformation. Right now its cut short and hadnt been permed in 2 months but it shedding and breaking in the front and thinking some of what’s going on may be due to my hormones. So if you would please recommend what process I need to take along with product(s) for me to keep hair health and strong. I am still flat ironing and curling. thanks

19 Maya November 6, 2011 at 2:28 pm

Hey Kcurly, ive been transitioning for about 2 months.
-not knowing that i wanted to go natural, i cut all the perm out my hair in about October 2010. (i got tired of the whole relaxer thing. ive only had about 4 my whole life. since 15 & im 21 now) after unknowingly “bc”-ing i got a few sew-in weaves over the months. so i haven’t had ANY perm in my hair. now i’ve only been doing the twistouts, conditioner water, oils, moisture, you know the basic up keep of natural hair since august of 2011. & i was wondering. ~how will i know when my hair is completely transitioned~ being that there already wasn’t any perm left to start with.(October 2010) i know this may sound confusing. but its hard to word it. lol

20 kcurly November 6, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Maya, you are right, it is confusing lol. I mean, if you’ve cut out all of the chemically treated areas, then you are already fully natural and transitioned. Hope that helps!

I was on another site called Blackhairmedia.com and they did an interview with a lady named Rohelle Mosley of Salon 804. I personally never heard of her but I’ll copy and paste a passage from the interview. Let me know what you guys think.

Here’s the passage: “SR: You are probably familiar with the natural vs. relaxed war. Who wins?

RM: Hands down relaxer wins. Women wear their hair natural and realize that they aren’t getting the same (type of) attention. I am rocking bald and I am attracting this Rastas! When they realize they aren’t attracting what they like they go back to the relaxer. Oh, and it’s not necessary to go Afrocentric! Both have pros and cons. A relaxer, in my opinion, is easier to maintain than natural hair. With natural hair it’s about texture and the texture is “the look”. It’s more of a look than a style. It’s hard to find that balance.

I left a comment that is still awaiting moderation here’s my response:
“Hands down relaxer wins. I think this is a very ignorant statement unless of course she is joking but I don’t think she is joking. For all you natural ladies out there, keep in mind this is a woman who makes her living on doing weaves and relaxers. In addition, it doesn’t appear that she really knows anything about natural hair and may be a bit intimidated by the natural hair movement. My own personal experience and the experience from many women who go natural is that they are sick of shelling out close to $100 dollars a month on a relaxer/color/or weave. Not to mention scalp burns, hair thinning, and breakage. Quite frankly, who knows the long term effects of relaxers on our health. As far as styles for natural hair, you only have to go to Youtube and see the versatility of styles and how to care for natural hair. She has to be living in a bubble to think otherwise. Furthermore, her statement “when they realize they aren’t attracting what they like they go back to the relaxer”. What is she talking about?. Ever since I went natural, the last thing I want to do is go back to the relaxer. As far as attention, I get more positive attention from my natural hair than when I was wearing weaves, lacefront wigs, and extensions over my damaged scalped burned hair due to 30 plus years of relaxers. What she doesn’t know will fill a book. I wouldn’t support such a person who has such a low opinion of natural hair. She basically thinks its unattractive and hard to deal with. I thought we were getting pass this backward notion…but that hate train is never late

Kcurly,

I have read all over your site which is pretty inclusive and I like it but I do have a question. I am planning on combing out my locs next week and keeping the hair natural (I never liked perms). I wanted to know what you would recommend is a simple hairstyle, besides a fro, that I could rock after my locs are combed out. I’m a pretty low maintenance chic so I was looking for something that is idiot and fool proof. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thank you.

Shoshana

Hi Kcurly ,

You have been VERY informative and i’m glad I’ve found your blog. I am 15 years old but i don’t like my longish relaxed hair . I have been thinking of going natural because i want my hair to be thick, strong, longer and healthy. My hair has taken YEARS to get it to where it is now and that is about the only reason i don’t want to chop it all off because i am scared . Do you think i should still go natural ?? And if i do the BC how do i grow my hair out again .

Thank you
Omolemo

27 Cierra April 25, 2012 at 11:41 am

Hi,
I am new to natural hair. I transitioned and recently just cut out the relaxer which were on the ends. I have been doing twists and at first it was ok. But now one said is straighter and my twists will not stay together. This is more at the top of my head the back does just fine. My front is actually longer than my back. Could this be the issue? My twist outs look awful because of this. Do I need to cut my hair even with the back? HELP!
