Products I Love

I do a lot of product reviews and though I might like a product a lot, it doesn’t mean that I will use it on a regular basis. Here are the products that are usually in my rotation. I have not reviewed a few of these, but I will update as I add reviews.

How do I choose my products?

  • Must have a pleasant smell
  • Must have mostly quality ingredients and no silicones (unless straightening)
  • Must leave my hair feeling relatively soft
  • Must be a reasonable price
  • Available locally is a plus, but not a requirement

Umm just how is a shea butter a moisturizer!!! For it has no water in it at all. Now shea butter is basically an oil, and we all know [or should know] that oil and water dont mix due to the hydrophobic and hydrophilic phenomenon which I would not get into. But shea butter DOES lock in the moisturize, if that is what you were trying to say. Just place water in a bowl and drop some oil into it; the oil stays at the top right? That is what happens to our hair when we add moisture and seal our hair with shea butter.

HappyKinks, thank you for such an upbeat and positive response.

If you look in practically any reference, you will shea butter listed as a moisturizer and emollient. An most importantly, in my own personal experience, it is moisturizing.

Take care

Hello,

I’ve been Natural since dec 2010, I was using a mixture of Shea butter & Aloe Vera gel with Coconut oil as my moisturiser. I think I need a change, bearing in mind I live in the UK, What do you suggest I use?
Please take a look at this link for an idea of what my hair texture is like.

Hi I have been natural since, 2007. I use Sulfur 8 Loc Twist and Braid Gel, and Sulfur 8Loc Twist and Braid Butter. I sometimes use Murray’s Gel, Loc-Lock, and Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Creme Wax. All of these product are good for my two strand twist and my kinky twist. When I want a shine, I use Palmers/Olive oil for braids only a little in the palm of your hands. I wash my scalp with African Pride shampoo and condition for braids. I don’t use to much of the braid butter or Locking Creme wax, because it will weigh the hair down. In the summer I were braids and I usually were my natural hair in the fall and winter.

Hello, I have been natural for about a year completely and, I flat iron my hair. My hair is about 2 inches from my shoulders. When I flat iron my hair and when I go outside in the heat my hair puffs up. Of course its because of the humidity but its cold outside and my hair started to puff up too!!Its so hard to deal with it sometimes I just want to put a relaxer in my hair. I put serum on my hair before i go out so I dont know what the problem is. PLEASE Help!!! I DO NOT want to go back to a relaxer.

Victoria, the only suggestion I have is to try a different reversion product and be sure it has silicones in it. Otherwise, I am a strong believer in not trying to fight your hair. I know a lot of people can live as straightened naturals but it would not work for me, more than likely because it would be too frustrating with my current lifestyle. Maybe you could try some other natural styles? Good luck to you.

I appreciate your work! I just got The Science of Black Hair, an amazing book. In it, she says that shea butter is a form of an oil. It feels moisturizing, but water and a leave in would be the moisture, and then the shea butter would be the sealant, to seal in the moisture of the water and the leave in. It is true that shea butter feels moisturizing, but it is a sealant that happens to feel moisutrizing. Your site is awesome, thanks for all you do! You are beautiful!

Hi,

I’m thinking of going natural but don’t want to do the big chop. Is there a way to avoid it? My natural hair is wavy and I only permed it twice a year. Since, I’m considering going natural, I haven’t permed my hair since January. I was looking at Carol’s Daughter Transitioning hair care, is it any good?! Thanks for the help

Cari, just slowly trim the ends every month until all the relaxed hair is gone. You’d have to try the CD to see if yo like it or not. Good luck to you!

Great piece, I have a blog as well, I was wondering – Is there something you could do to stop people copying your work? When you have a lot of content online like you do, sometimes you see it appearing somewhere else on the web. Its so irratating and I don’t know how to stop it. Any tips?

I’m looking for a product that will help loosen my tight curls. My curls are so tight I can’t wear my hair out without it reverting back to its shrunken state. Please help.

Great Product list! I think my all time favorite hair product is Terressentials hair mud. Don’t need much after that. I wrote about it on my blog at :

Victoria,
I have the same problem I grew out my perm for two years then in june cut all the rest of perm off and I have the SAME problem with humity, more than cold. But 1st I say if your will to be natural is more important then stick it out, other thing that works for me is LUSTERS PINK spray oil OR a HOT SIX oil rub on hands then hair and wrap hair and that should help a little :)

hey ya’ll, reading the comments are bringing back memories!!!! i have been natural since 2001 and am still learning abt my hair all the time. 1st embrace your hair and its quirks…humidity? dryness? tight curls? work it! first, most of us wanted 3c/4a/tracee ellis ross hair, and not everyone has that. if your hair dsnt have that loose curl naturally, you can create it with a twist out or braid out. no money for products? a spray bottle of water, some shea butter and you can have beautiful twistouts. want length w/out flat-ironing? stretch out the hair. wear it in a bun, or try bantu knots…when you take the hair dwn you’ll have some length. it wont be perfectly straight, but if you are going natural, you will have to give up the straightness of the perm. you can go to the salon for a blowout/flatiron for that same look, but if you live in a humid area, that wont work!!!! now there are some brazilian products that will keep the hair straight, but even white girls are telling me how the effect last for 3-4 wks, and they cldnt get their curls back. you run the risk of a.) damaging your hair and b.) losing your curl action until your hair reverts back and sometimes it never does.
it took me a while, but i have figured out how to make my hair achieve all the looks you see in the media, without artificially changing my hair texture. ladies it is possible! but its not just about changing your hair, its about changing YOUR MIND. you can have beautiful hair, but you have to change what YOU think is beautiful, or it will still look ugly to you.
