Regimen
My hair regimen is ever changing, but here is what I currently do. The list may change as I (and my hair) grow.
- No or only water soluble silicones unless straightening
- Only comb hair when wet, soaked with conditioner, using a wide-toothed comb or Denman brush, preferably under a shower stream
- Only trim when needed or if I see single strand knots/split end
- Rarely shampoo unless swimming is involved
- Conditioner wash when I wash my hair, especially if it’s everyday
- If I need to get rid of buildup, I use ACV rinses, baking soda wash, or diluted castile soap
- Protective styling as much as I can. That includes twists, coils, twist out, braids, braid outs, buns, puff buns. When hair is in twists, etc, I will pin up the hair at least 5 days a week to protect my ends from brushing clothes, etc.
- Frequent moisturizing as needed. Either with a spritz/spray or cream. I use spritz when in a protective style and a cream when my hair is “out”
- Deep conditioning every time hair is washed, preferably 3 or 4 hours, with a plastic cap or grocery bag.
- Sleep with a satin cap, scarf, or sleep on a satin pillowcase. Also, if I’m just bumming around the house, keep hair protected with a scarf or bonnet.
- Rarely use heat.
- No mineral oil or petroleum products.
- I may oil rinse before a DC or cowash
- Oil or moisturize my edges at least every other day and treat them gently to encourage growth/repair relaxer damage
- Oil scalp when itchy with jojoba oil or other light product. Otherwise, nothing on the scalp.
- Protein treatment every 6 weeks or so.

Hi everyone this is first time here amd I am hoping this site fits me…….I been natural since december 16……. This journey has its ups and downs…..this is my third attempt and I finally did my big chop so there is no going back……
My regime now is wearing protective styles….. Right now its wigs….. I decided in order to have less manipulation I will braid my hair in small single braid but not to small and leave it for a whole month ……I wash ( with my african black soap )and deep condition every week ( coconut oil, coconut milk, honey, shea butter cholesterol ) for no less than one hour….
I want to know is that healthy…….(to leave my hair braided naturally for that long)
S.N: my wig is not glued so I remove it every time before bed……
My daily moisturizer: water and apple cider vinegar( in a stay bottle for a balanced ph, moisture and to keep it clean in between washes)…….aloe vera concoction ( shea butter, aloe vera gel, coconut oil, tea tree oil) to seal in the moisture, protect my hair and keep it healthy….. I would like to know is my regime healthy for my hair….
Internally I am currently taking hairfinity pills and trying to drink plenty of water, I workout when I can and try to keep away from junk food often…..
Thank you……….
Might as well try to apply your hair regimen. I’ve been feeling lazy for the past month that I’m not even paying attention to my hair and now it looks so awful. Hope that if I try to do your stuff my hair will go back on how it was before.
I’m 16 and I have decided to go natural. I can not keep up with my hair especially during track season. I found this blog while searching for natural hairstyles that are authorized in the navy. this blog is really helping me out. I have my hair braided right now but I’m planning on going natural after I take them out. Is it possible to grow out you relaxer or do you have to cut off your hair??
Sarah, you can do either, it’s up to you. Good luck on your journey!
I was searching for a website or a place where I get some help . I did the big chop a year ago and now im totally depressed about my hair . I dont know what Im doing and it just breaks my spirt and I cry all the time . I cant find any products that works for my hair , my hair is dry , damaged, brittle and spliting , and oh yea now im losing hair around my edges. And everytime I touch my hair it falls out continuously .I am only 20. I go on youtube and research and try products but I dont have money to go and run out every single time I heard of something new. My last resort is back to a perm because thats the only thing I know but I really dont want to do that. I feel like my hair was healthy perm compared to what is is now being natuaral.I love to have natural hair but sometimes I just dont know . So help Me !
I love this site ! thank you for being a blessing to all.
I have recently decided that I wanted to go natural. My hair was severely damaged so I cut it completely off, all of it. I need a lil guidance with the whole going natural process, I’m completely lost. What products should I use?? I want my hair to grow back strong and soft and curly….. What are some tips that I can use??
I hear many of your concerns and questions. I’ve experienced those same feelings since my last Touch Up in June 2011. To keep it simple, I am fully natural with hair that I love to touch and play in. Jojoba oil , avocado oil and organic coconut oil are my daily hair staples that I mix and apply after adding water and maybe a light conditioner to my hair. My suggestion is that you apply water and one product a week to see how your hair responds. This will allow you to mix & match and make a regimen that is idea for your hair type. A good transitioning style for me was the flat two strand twists, finished off with a bantu knot. When loosened, your hair has a curl affect that you can part, pin up or style similarly to your old “relaxed” look. What I love about this style is the flexibility to wear it at work – Mon thru Fri and make it a weekend style by adding a headband. If I could give you advice that sticks with you – unless you are wearing a wash and go, do the major preparation for your hair at night. I have yet to meet someone that doesn’t find themselves rushing at some point in the morning : ) When rushing, you are more likely to pull and yank your precious hair which does more harm then good. With natural hair it’s even more important to be delicate. You may even allow your fingers to replace your combs and brushes. Let your fingers get used to the feel of your hair – through detangling, parting and product application. Make no mistake about it, I’ve found out the hard way. It’s all about the choices you make. Choose to be patient. One year and counting…
hi Candi sorry to learn about your distress of caring for your natural hair – please also have a look at luvbeinnatural on youtube (a great site and quite a straight forward advise)- you may pick up tips to care for your hair type just as you may on this site. This may help you out. Also is there an afro group in your area that you can join?
